An incredibly top-heavy album that will undoubtedly re-establish Banks as a top notch female pop artist in today's competitive and "hard-to-please" music industry but falls just a bit short of her debut as the back half lacks the standouts. Still solid work and the first half is vintage Banks at her finest. Recommended Songs: Fuck With Myself, Lovesick, Mind Games

I've always found Banks' alt R&B to carry just enough bassy dynamics to be interesting, and The Altar is no exception: this is pleasant alt R&B with UK bass and downtempop tendencies, but it never strays from that formula - which is "perfected" (by her standards) in the first two tracks.

Banks delivers perhaps the most terminally mid-2010s pop album that is determined and destined to generate buzz but not enough to break charts. Then again, it doesn't aim at that. It also doesn't quite aim at any staying power. Being terminally mid-2010s comes with the understanding that once the buzz quiets down, the whole album cycle is completely forgotten and never returned to. It is a perfectly serviceable in-the-moment album that requires minimum effort in comprehension and does not demand revision.

Big jump in quality from Goddess imo. The Altar sees Banks explore many different directions, not always successfully, but generally interestingly. Not that many clear jams (1 and the fka twiggy 2, maybe 10), but apart form 4 and 5 which are really by far the worst tracks, especially the mainstreamy radio poppy 5, most tracks are ok to nice. 11 and 13 are kinda cool, and 12 is an example of Banks succesfully doing a mellow track. Not earth-shattering, but a fine album. 3.35

banks is a really talented pop singer, but she doesn't put enough weight on her tracks to make an impact on the listener. as it stands, this is another boring alternative pop album that overstays its welcome. i don't get the hype, honestly. there are much better pop artists putting way better work out there these days. 2.5
