5.0 classic | korman643 | October 5th 16 | Meshuggah's most devastating and complex album to date, makes "Chaosphere" sound like easy listening. Not a single filler, even if early tracks "Born In Dissonance" and "Nostrum" are by far the weakest and less representative. "Clockworks", "Ivoy Tower", "Our Rage Won't Die Out" and the title track are destined to become all time classics. Most of the songs were written by Haake and bassist Dick Lovgren, who for the first time makes a substantial songwriting contrinution to a Meshuggah records. As a writing debut, it's nothing less than stunning

2.0 poor | Xenophanes EMERITUS | September 29th 16 | It's hard defending Meshuggah half the time becuase so many of their attributes are almost objectively bad. For those who enjoy them, like me, it's easy to look past the inherent monotony of their music. There's a meditative property to their swirling madness that makes it worth it. "Koloss" traded this in for tighter songwriting whereas "Catch Thirty-three" wholly embraced it. "Obzen" blended both sides to near perfection.r"The Violent Sleep of Reason," however, is the worst parts of Meshuggah in album form. It's boring. It's homogeneous. It's uneventful. After a week of listening only "MonstroCity" stands out, and that's only because it has the dumbest song title I've ever heard.rDisappointing but not surprisingly so. Meshuggah has always been this lame but they have always made up for it with a smooth and cool sound. Here it's just not enough.

3.3 great | Trey STAFF | September 22nd 16 | Meshuggah have made another Meshuggah album. They've basically painted themselves into a corner with their sound, and how little they're willing to deviate from their core formula. So, this one is subtly different from the last one, but it still sounds very familiar even on first listen. Still a great release, though.

4.5 superb | XSebbyMcMuffinX | October 7th 21 | As a longtime fan of Meshuggah, this release is an absolute treat for me. For anyone inclined towards nerding out over technicalities: Koloss was an effective step away from simply repeating odd patterns in a clever formation by including more specifically placed deviations. However, I feel that it actually detracted from that album's replay value, despite it being slightly less predictable. However, on this album, there's a perfect balance between formulaic and nuanced, and some more subtle tricks are introduced that may not be noticeable if giving oneself wholly to the "swirl" rather than focusing on staying grounded. FANTASTIC examples: By the Ton's riffs don't line up into the 4 of 4/4 groupings, meaning if you start following one riff, you might not be on the original on-beat. Also, this track is absolutely loaded with parts that constantly change, more like demented free jazz. Another great example is Stifled: The intro contains 3 notes before the phrase kicks in, meaning the first downbeat is on a fast offbeat. There're little things like this that make perfect sense for Meshuggah, but just haven't been utilized like this until now, and it shows that they're still capable of finding room for growth within their thoroughly established identity. On a visceral level, this thing just fucking bangs. Clockworks, Monstrocity, Ivory Tower, Nostrum, In Decay... All killer, totally distinct within their discography. Good workout album with no major lulls.

3.5 great | BRAman22 | August 4th 17 | Meshuggah has always been one of those bands that I need to be in the mood for to really enjoy. Despite being entertaining, there albums of theirs that I would definitely turn to first when in said moods.

2.0 poor | EasterInTheBatcave | December 19th 16 | On paper, this should be excellent. Namely, this was recorded live in the studio... yes. However, the songs just don't do much for me. My opinion might change with subsequent listens, as is wont to happen with this band, but for now, I just can't get as into this album as I would like. Every track blurs together in a sea of chugging, and the grooves themselves aren't really, well, groovy. Great production, though.

3.0 good | zaruyache | November 24th 16 | I really really hate that guitar tone. It has an almost squeaky sound to it, like someone's rubbing two pieces of evil leather together. Squeeko squee squuhhh uhhh squuun. That, and by now everything Meshuggah do sounds beaten-to-death, and there's nothing stylistically interesting here but the same thing they've been doing before, but with none of the nuances that made any of their previous albums unique.

2.5 average | hellpickle | October 29th 16 | Reminiscent feelings of Explosions in the Sky "Take Care, Take Care, Take Care" album. It sounds like the artist, but it just seems hollow and soulless.rMaybe I'm not in the mood for Meshuggah now, but now it seems like some superficial imitation. 'Our Rage Won't Die' is alright, but yeah, the rest seems like a blur and 'Stifled' had a weird ending.

4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | October 9th 16 | The Violent Sleep Of Reason is a deeply Meshuggah album with all of the polyrhythmic djent-y fun and intensity you would expect. Pushing the envelope? No. But it still goes to show you how no one does it like Meshuggah can do it, and they sound as lively and as groovy as they have in years. It essentially exists to remind everyone who top dog is in this little genre, and how far ahead they are of their peers. And even ignoring all of that, it's a pretty sweet album on its own merits. It sounds absolutely phenomenal, with each instrument given just enough clarity to be heard, but the rawness of the sound retained as well. The songwriting isn't necessarily anything new, but it remains at a very high quality despite this due to the fact that Meshuggah. Basically, it's Meshuggah doing Meshuggah in the most Meshuggah way, just better than they have in a bit. Meshuggah.

4.5 superb | Suli | October 8th 16 | Meshuggah have delivered something that will undoubtedly stand as one of the highlights in their discography. From the start the music is relentless, only briefly pausing to take a breath on the ambient outro during "stifled". A lot of interesting ideas are explored, and the recording/production style give the album a refreshing organic feel. Definitely worth checking out.

3.3 great | Voivod STAFF | October 7th 16 | Meshuggah converge further regarding the relaxation process triggered with Koloss, with the new album coming as "lesser" compared to any anything that followed Contradictions Collapse and preceded Koloss. In part, its bare bones look and feel can be explained by the Swedes' decision to sound more organic by recording live, and tweaking the final outcome, sparingly. That said, it's unclear whether Fredrik Thordendal's abstaining from the song writing process (so as to focus on the next Special Defects album), had anything to do with how album turned out. Whatever the case may be and despite the absence of real highlights, The Violent Sleep of Reason transmits a tribal industrial vibe that's hard to overlook. Favorite tracks: Born In Dissonance, Nostrum and the self-titled
