Mac Miller has had an interesting career, huh? It's interesting to see him spin off in a new direction; he's been steadily gaining critical respect since 2013 and the projects have been pretty good, but definitely reached a plateau with his last full length. The problem with this one is that even though it sounds different than anything he's done before, it's kind of boring, and feels derivative of the recent Kendrick/Chance jazz-rap wave in spurts.

After going hazy on GO:OD AM, Miller now goes for the soul-influenced jazz hop. Also, after going sad on GO:OD AM, he now goes for the joyful - good for him (at the time). These stylistic changes are laudable, yet The Divine Feminine rarely manages to fully adapt Miller's persona to his newfound aesthetic. Still a cool record, but one that ultimately falters compared to GO:OD AM and Faces.

excellent prodution doesn't completely make up for the lack of interesting lyrics nor the fact that miller gets constantly overshadowed by the beats. a missed opportunity. 3

While it definitely contains a good amount of cheesiness, the production is absolutely phenomenal, the hooks are pretty great across the board, and it's commendable that Mac Miller continues to experiment with his sound/style. A successful experiment that works more often than not.
