On the punk tracks, the energy, riffs and musicianship is fantastic, the vocals are atrocious, like the band is fronted by an angry chipmunk, or a pre-pubescent Dave Mustaine. The Reggae songs are okay, definitely don't flow with what goes on otherwise. However, everyone touts that they "blend Reggae with Hardcore", this is bullshit, as it's either a Reggae song, or a Punk song, switching between each. So, no blending of styles is going on within tracks like you'd see in say Minutemen who blend multiple styles within 1 composition. Instead it's like jamming the two genres into a truly bipolar playlist.

Straight-up hxc that knows how to riff, interluded (?) by some chill reggae cuts. The riffing is very cool ("Attitude" damn) but it could have been a 25-30 minute record with like one reggae track (I'd choose "I and I Survive") in the middle. Would have pleased me more in terms of sequencing. Not a huge fan of the vocals either, but after several listens they start to feel less grating.

Bad Brains' unique (at the time) mixing of both hardcore punk and reggae exclusive sounds enters the fray a second time with Rock for Light, another exciting release which bears slightly less energy than its self-entitled elder sibling, though when your band's made up of four Rastafarians in synch, it's still more than simply good.
