It's very apparent that sharing a member with Amenra is doing very interesting things for this band. Gone are the d-beats
and most of the hardcore influence, now replaced by a straight up melodic black metal feel and heavy shoegaze and post-
rock influences. Singer Caro's vocals croon, shudder, screech, and explode throughout the entire record and really capture
something special when paired with the emotive instrumentals the band has performed here. This may be my AOTY.

Second Son of R is probably my song of the year, Caro sounds absolutely unhinged in the climax. I don't usually enjoy that kind of indulgent, un-melodic style of just screaming, but it's well done here, which might be the most surprising thing of the album

A blackgaze rollercoaster ride with a beautiful contrast between post metal builds, acoustic interludes and some of the most aggressive metal of recent memory. Just listen to Second Son of R as Caro Tanghe alternates between chilling screams, black metal shrills and beautiful clean vocals; a great juxtaposition of styles. This album feels like a passing of the torch in the genre after Deafheaven's disappointing New Bermuda. Oathbreaker shines in all of the styles they take on here but the biggest strength of the record may be the songwriting. Being Able to Feel Nothing is one example where the majority of the track is a tense buildup before exploding just after the five minute mark into some of the most powerful screams on the album. The tracklist seems to alternate between intense blackgaze epics and extremely quiet, more atmospheric pieces and works favorably giving the listener a break where it is needed. Not an album that will warrant being replayed over and over again but one that deserves a listen from any fan of blackgaze, black metal or even post metal.

Addiction can affect any human, whether they think so or not, and can come in a variety of ways. Rheia deals with an addiction, one that may seem harmless at first but can be as damaging as any other: addiction to someone else. Through the lyrics, and the relentless passion poured out through a masterful vocal performance, it seems apparent that even though this person is broken and tattered, they cannot keep themselves away from the very person that caused it. Oathbreaker take to a "blackgaze" style here, but the simple notion is that this is not a tired retread of the trail Alcest and Deafheaven blazed. This is a different beast entirely, fueled by a performance both ferocious and tender, both full of life and without the will to go on. The production is simply phenomenal, with a clarity given to each instrument and the vocals, none of which are ever at war with each other. Ultimately, Rheia is a stunning accomplishment for Oathbreaker, and makes itself known as an important album in the realm of "blackgaze".

Stylistically some sort of amalgamation of punk and black metal with its own brand of experimental atmospheric influences to boot. I don't even know what that means, but it riffs and it blasts and it sounds like nothing else out there.
