The only thing mildly "progressive" about this shapeless pile of wank is how shamelessly it beats you over the head with its completely frivolous songwriting. The only real, unique texture that happens here, in spite of the completely ass production, comes from the horns against the guitars- and whaddya know, said horns kill the horse at the beginning and continue to kick it for the rest of the album. And the vocals? Good god. This band makes BTBAM look like Cynic and my fucking head hurts.

Between the clarion vox and histrionics and burnish and questionable collision of horns+strings+prog, the mighty forces of obnox are strong with this one -- it'd be super-superfluous to cite the skill and silly to say it's free of stirring moments, but also damn difficult to declare this ain't an overrefined+overstuffed corn-fest whose fusion is usually unwieldy. Speaking of corn, an excerpt from the (blech) epilogue: "We have so many songs still left to sing / Too many notes for normal folks to understand". From a normal folk to y'all, nah I think I'm good, thanx tho.

Alt Prog with jazz influences, to include all kinds of brass instrumentation. As should be expected with that kind of description, the price of admission is pretty high. I expect that there are just as many people that hate this as like it. To me, it kind of remind me of Coheed and Cambria meets Art By Numbers meets Fair to Midland. Yes, you have to be in the right mood for this or the horns and nasally vocals will drive you crazy, but when the mood is right, Stranger Heads Prevail is excellent and definitely delivers a unique listening experience.

I found it interesting that, despite the incredibly gorgeous chord progressions and happy melodies throughout the entire album, some lines are dark as hell. "The world you know is gone", for example. The whole album truly sounds like it's coming from the heads of mad scientists, which appears to fit a story the album is telling that I've yet to fully piece together. If there was a downside, it's that there isn't a radio-friendly song in sight. There's nothing I can put on a playlist for quick groovy songs, because so many tracks here change wildly overtime, and they can be up to 9 minutes long.

No need to thank me guys, I am just doing my job.rStranger Heads Prevail is reminiscent of Dogfish Head Brewing Company. Perhaps they should make a beer together. Throw a ton of wild stuff together and despite the fact that you clearly are really good at your craft and know what you are doing the final product often feels middle of the line or just above that. Thank You Scientist have their signature sound with elements of progressive rock, metal, ska, jazz, you name it but after sixty seven minutes none of that really sticks. The reason for that is the songwriting and production. Each song feels stuck in the same gear in the same general realm. Wild horns, jazzy grooves and Michael Jackson vocals but devoid of much emotion. Not the album of the year and also not trash like others harshly claim. Just another prog band that has strayed past powerful songwriting and out thought themselves.

TYS knock another album right out of the ball park as another solid post-hardcore album w/ heavier jazz influences when compared to their first album. Still hesitant to rate this album any higher than superb, but I'm enjoying this album very much!

This is absolutely outstanding. And while I'm not one for instrumental tracks "Rube Goldberg Variations" is a fantastic instrumental and really is a showcase for how talented the members of this band are. I didn't think an album would challenge Terminal Redux for my AOTY but this is sure making a strong case. Can't stop playing it.
