It's a bit too top-heavy for my liking, but there's no denying that It Was Hot, We Stayed In The Water is the first album that showed what The Microphones could really do. Although the vast majority of it is centered around the ineffable Phil Elverum, it simply wouldn't have the same personality without those lovely backing vocal harmonies or the various instruments put into use. The first four tracks are utterly flawless, with opener "The Pull" being one of the greatest things Elverum ever put his name to and a staunch mission statement for the group as a whole. "The Glow" is also a classic track, as each of its eleven minutes is pure lo-fi indie greatness. Though the record unfortunately becomes bogged down by unnecessary interludes and filler tracks, it's ultimate endgame is achieved: letting the underground know that The Microphones were one of the most unique, endearing, and talented collectives around.
