Sorry y'all but I just didn't find this particularly stirring, even if that makes me sound like a heartless bastard. I understand it's kind of the point, but the dejection he's conveying is so hammerfisted that I struggle to relate. I don't doubt his sincerity, but the stripped down aesthetics don't make for particularly engrossing listening; that and some of the creative decisions like the "ooh ohh"s on Girl in Amber feel a bit melodramatic. Good album but that's all, may bump one day but I dunno.

I read the soundoffs for this album and thought "there's no way it's that good." This is me admitting I'm wrong. Yes, maybe his voice does stray into more melodramatic territory sometimes but this is pretty much the only issue and given the context of the record it's an issue easily forgiven. Compositionally it's sparse and uncompromisingly bleak and melancholy. And yet, there's a strange, but totally incredible sense of catchiness as well. Opener "Jesus Alone" has a harrowing hook that's as wrought with fear and uncertainly as it is immediate and memorable. The backing vocalizations in "Rings Of Saturn" are forlorn and saddening but also catchy as they come. It's not every year you get what is essentially a singer-songwriter album with pop sensibilities that is truly as dark, frustrated, and hopeless as this one. Even if you haven't heard anything from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds before, you owe it to yourself to hear Skeleton Tree. You may feel drained and maybe a bit down afterward, but that's to be expected: nothing is for free.

Whilst much of it was written before the death of his son Arthur, tragedy and introspection has informed the very essence of this work, making for a haunting masterpiece for the ages. Warren Ellis' subtle compositions create the perfect counterpoint to Cave's baritone delivery of his darkly poetic and abstract vocal drama.

Stands the test of time and will keep on standing still, cause this is some of the most deceptively uncomfortable minimal music you can imagine. The whistling backing track throughout the whole album will haunt me forever.

Heartfelt, cold, and yet somehow warm at the same time. Mr. Cave manages to reinvent himself once again. Capturing the beauty in his own despair. Distant Sky is the best example of this.

Emotions are like oysters. The rawer, the tastier. This album is tasty. Even when you don't pay attention to the lyrics, your heart can't help but shrink. It's a mere dwarf heart when you listen to these words. The last three tracks on here are some of the most heart-wrenching recent songs. Beautiful record. At peace.

Skeleton Tree is a captivating, heart-rending meditation from a true artist coming to terms with the most horrific tragedy a person can experience. Many of the tracks in Skeleton Tree see Cave paint bizarre, beautiful pictures of lost loves in much the same way as predecessor Push The Sky Away did. Continuing from where it left off, the instrumentation is largely based on dissonant string arrangements and unsettling ambience. The bare bones playing provides appropriate musical terrain for Cave to exorcise his demons, giving a tense feeling over the listening experience. This is due largely to the vulnerable, and sometimes even quivering vocal performance by Cave. Skeleton Tree is meant to be a record for everyone, a naked, honest depiction of true grief in musical form. This is as much a sorrowful exploration as a loving sendoff for his fans, but more importantly, for himself.

I feel like the people who are giving this very high ratings have some thin skin.rYes, Skeleton Tree does come right after the death of Nick Cave's son. Yes, it's all very emotional and touching, and it does deserve some for having these deep lyrics and interesting instrumentals. However, I agree with Trey on this. It sounds like poetry that was written as a school assignment. It's sad, but it's wallowing in what almost sounds like self-pity. This could easily be Sputnik's 2016 AOTY, and I'm okay with that, but this didn't hit me very well. Sorry.

i don't feel like i won't return to this anytime soon for obvious reasobs, but it's also an album that i see myself returning to if i need to. it's dark, haunting, sad and often painful but always sincere and with a light at the end of the tunnel, never melodramatic. 4.5-
