| 2.5 average | hadriel | September 17th 16 | It's not a bad album, but can't help but feel like this band is just safely chugging out the sameish sounding generic prog metal we're used to hearing. There's so much talent here, that I wish they'd experiment outside their comfort zone a bit more.

| 4.5 superb | Kris/KJ | September 18th 16 | Wasn't crazy about the album initially (and a little disappointed to be honest), but the more I listen my opinion changes for the better. Love that they added in more keyboards and there are concurrent themes throughout the album and that it feels like 1 complete piece rather than a random collection of songs; the first time I've been able to say that since In Search of Truth and Inner Circle.

| 4.0 excellent | MaidenUFO | June 23rd 21 | Not exactly a step back from their previous release, but I prefer Hymns a bit more. However, every Evergrey album keeps good standards, with this adding more keybords. Many great songs like "The Impossible", "Astray", "Passing through" and "Distance"

| 3.5 great | Trey STAFF | October 3rd 16 | At its core, The Storm Within is just another typical traditional progressive metal release that shares plenty with song-oriented bands such as Queensryche and Fates Warning. There’s the obviously excellent musicianship, powerful choruses, classy solos, and soaring vocals that make up any good progressive metal album, but there’s also a bit more. The Storm Within takes most of the good parts of traditional prog and mixes them with a subtle djent/modern prog edge. Admittedly, I don’t really keep up with Evergrey, but I’m pretty sure the modern elements are new for them. Whether or not they are, the band pulls off their sound really well.

| 3.5 great | Voivod STAFF | September 18th 16 | Evergrey's music simply cannot fall below certain, fairly high quality standards, and The Storm Within is no exception. While all Evergrey albums are emotional in design, it's safe to say that new album goes red in the said respect. What's more, with the arrangements not being as tight as in previous albums, The Storm Within works as a whole, as there's not a single track, that's infinitely more catchy that the rest (the way "Frozen" was in Glorious Collision). (is the album) A small step backwards before a future, bold step forwards? Only time will tell.

| 3.0 good | OmairSh | September 13th 16 | Was hoping for the band to step out of their comfort zone, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen soon
