The album that started my journey into more extreme forms of metal way back when I was 11 or so. Hugely important to me and still very good musically.

Spineshank's third album doesn't present any real revelations, it's simply a refinement of the sound that the band hit upon on 'The Height of Callousness'. The aggression of that disc has been toned down a tad, and the melodies have been ramped up. There's an obvious Stabbing Westward influence here, noticeable in the sonics of the disc, and also in that two tracks here share their titles with SW tracks (Violent Mood Swings, Falls Apart). Fortunately, Spineshank's melodic bent had developed well enough that this album is a consistently enjoyable affair, able to coast on that attribute in lieu of the full-throttle approach of it's predecessor. Jonny Santos' vocal is the best it's ever sounded here, full of power and conviction. This album, with the right push, would have knocked Linkin Park off the charts and given the mainstream a far better pet nu metal act.

Blurry (in the ratings) has definitely stated this album w/ similar thoughts I had and worded this album much better than I could write upon. Not an outstanding industrial (and nu-metal) album. Hell, it's more impressive and enjoyable than Staind's Dysfunction album and more invoking than Pressure 4-5's Burning the Process. Still, I'd much rather hear NIN's Pretty Hate Machine than this, and already created a better industrial sound pre-90's.

Despite containing subpar lyrics and occasionally unbalanced songwriting, Self Destructive Pattern's got an abrasive, though also melodious sound that is further stretched out by frontman Jonny Santos' primeval-like, but still very enjoyable vocal performance. The musicianship on this Spineshank offering simplistically carries alternative and industrial metal influences, albeit handled in a little more than serviceable way.
