"Hen To Pan" is a dark and visceral classical/chamber album composed by John Zorn and featuring
two cellist, a violinist, pianist and drummer who all work in macabre unison to present one of the
best neo-classical releases by Zorn. "Occam's Razor" and "Ouroboros" harken back to Zorn's earlier
chamber works, "Magick" and "Mysterium" but with a fresh sense of vitality and aggression. These
compositions will separate the avid fans of experimental music from the sissies without feeling
any remorse. "Ouroboros" being one of Zorn's best classical pieces is represented in three
different forms on the album, with the string musicians portraying this behemoth in a vast array
of crescendos, subtle sparse passages and complete orchestral freak outs. These tracks aren't
easily digestible after first listen and may not appeal to listeners who don't already enjoy
contemporary classical music. It is also disappointing that there are technically only three new
compositions, but there's enough lasting value in these arrangements to leave a lasting impression
on fans of Zorn and avant-garde music alike. 3.8/5
