| 2.5 average | TheManMachine | October 1st 16 | Now hey, I dig straightforward sinisterness and detached scream snippets as much as the next guy, but the unceasing scant creepin' here gets monotonous fast and doesn't offer much beyond its modest evolutions and through-n-through cogent chill. But the cogent chill is chill, and it does excel as an eerie+easy exercise for beat-construction dissection: stern and simple booming bass pulse here, picayune percussion/scratches for contrast there, maybe throw in some clarion drones, in comes the repetitive two-note guitar part. I dig a repetitive two-note guitar part too, and they've got 'em in spades -- if only they varied from song to song.

| 3.0 good | Alabaster Jones | June 16th 16 | Nowhere near as unsettling as their debut record, Tooth is a solid, albeit inconsequential collection of tracks from Raime. The sound here is based heavily in ambient, with dark undertones and a cold vibe to it. There's no clear cut favorite out of these tracks, but they're all at least decent in their own right. By design or by accident, the album takes a pretty easy-listening, background-music approach to the style, never quite going anywhere adventurous, but never becoming a bore to listen to either. In this regard, though the tracks definitely blend into each other throughout the album, it isn't a problem due to the very level playing field they're on. It's a well done album, but it is a bit of a disappointing affair from a group that prides themselves on making some very chilling electronic music.
