So I absolutely loathed MKL. I thought it was one of the most overrated rap releases of 2014, thought YG had absolutely no skill and that the beats were absolutely awful. This shit right here, though, is absolutely gangsta. I have no idea what happened in these two years, but apparently his split with DJ Mustard put the homie on the right track, because this is raw, hard, smart and fun at the same time. Good work, YG, good work.

i gotta say, i wasn't the biggest my krazy life fan. that album relied too much on dj mustard and it's features to really work and the concept lacked impact. for that reason, i wasn't really expecting much from still brazy but man, not only is this shit good when it comes to its concept, it also bangs! perfect release for the summertime, with all these amazing late-90's west coast, funky typa beats and catchy af hooks. a huge improvement for yg! 4+

Still Brazy sports such a cool g-funk coat it feels like the 90s again. While the vibe is clearly there, YG ain't the most impressive rapper. His storytelling is apparently dope, but his technique ain't varied enough to transform these diatribe-charged texts into bona fide political rap classics.

YG displays improved lyricism on his second album, making this yet another important record for the West Coast. I've lived on the East Coast all my life, and always resented the late/mid 90's ban on West Coast rap, esp. after Pac died, so it's great to see Cali rappers being among the most visible in the mainstream again. Gizzle switches from DJ Mustard to an assortment of producers, mostly Swish and P-Lo. There are still some Mustard inspired intros on the songs, but almost every track has that Daz/Battlecat G-Funk style of the late 90's. It's defiantly West Coast, and all the tracks bang. The album has a great flow, and smart sequencing helps the very few mediocre songs. YG mainly raps about reactions to his new found fame, people looking for handouts and the betrayals he has been on the receiving end of. The last 3 tracks switch to social issues, regarding a racist president and racial profiling from the police. YG makes it clear that he does not support that way of thinking, and shows unity with the Hispanic community as well. A strong, poignant finish that turns an already great album into a classic.

What YG may lack in a discrete identity and novel ideas he makes up for with clear-cut and compact tunes through-n-through, blending humor+dread in a candid depiction of Bompton-Blood lyfe -- a realm where Gimme gets popped for demanding handouts and our narrator ponders bout who popped him in the studio, a vibe that Drake seems utterly unseemly in, a disposition that somehow someway endorses the ugly-ass misogyny of "She Wish She Was." True persuasion however comes when 'fuck's start flying and shit gets real during the topical terminal triad: "Fuck Donald Trump" is the bluntest and maybe most imperative out of all the winning hooks this album drops, Sad Boy comes through with a defiant cockcrow declaration straight outta Mexico, and second bluntest "Police Get Away Wit Murder" is incensed enough to incite the riots its title calls for; or at the very least a bustling mosh pit. That last one also sees YG reading off the names and dates of innocent youngins killed by cops, discovering aloud that Kimani Gray's death falls on his birthday -- it's the most resentful he sounds on the entire record.
