Simultaneously a new way forward and a return to roots, Transcendence breathes new life into
Devin's music. The album is masterfully executed in nearly every detail, and letting the band
contribute has (at least in part) resulted in some of the DTP's strongest songwriting.
(Stormbending, Offer Your Light, and the astonishing title track are all perfect examples.) Easily
Devin's best album since Deconstruction.

Some of the songs are too long, and the songwriting isn't as consistently satisfying as Sky Blue, but this is another rock-solid effort from Hevy Devy and the production is the best he's ever had. "Stormbending", "Secret Sciences", "Stars", and "Offer Your Light" are tremendous.

Devin Townsend has never been very consistent. For every City, Terria, or Ocean Machine album there’s been any of the post-City SYL albums, Physicist, and also a majority of the Devin Townsend Project releases. That’s just the trade off we make in order to benefit from the times his manic personality has created a gem, but it had started to be a long time since we had received gold. I’m not sure what changed (other than he let his band be included in the writing), but Transcendence is excellent. It takes the best parts of his Ocean Machine and Terria albums, and mixes it with the catchier parts of his DTP stuff, and the end result is his best album in a long time. Easily his best to be listed under Devin Townsend Project, if nothing else. It’s about time.

This is such a great mix of old and new Dev. "Higher" is the perfect reflection of his discography within a single song. The only comment that I have is that I think the use of Anneke's voice has run its course. It was great on Addicted! and played well enough on Epicloud and Z2, but I definitely prefer the songs without her at this point.

an absolute return to form (didn't like epicloud all that much and there were some rflaws on their last double-album) from a band that keeps finding new ways of reinventing their sound, even after so many projects. trasncendence brings some aspects of devin's rolder material to the table, while introducing new elements that make all the rdiference. the solos on this are grander, bigger, more epic than ever, invoking more rmeaning to the lyrics that come before and after them. kudos to the drummer, excellent rwork all and throughout this shit. really, amazing album! 4

Has its moments that shine really bright like the rerecording of "Turth" and the fantastic "Stormbending" and the climatic "From the Heart". However, even with its tight production and solid performances, it starts to feel a bit stale. Tracks are structurally solid but go in one ear and right out the other. Still a pleasant listen with enough highs. The bonus disc, however, is great

When you put your 20 year old song as the first title on the new album, well... you're in trouble. Even worse is when it actually doesn't sound any better than the original. The only positive about this album is "Stormbending" which is excellent and feels inspired

The more I listen to this album, the more I'm loving it. I just can't seem to let it go. I'm sure as time goes on, I will rate it higher (currently 4), but the technicality and the songwriting are just amazing. Wow.

Transcendence is a progressive metal album that sees it's melodic traits progress as the album does. Many of the longer songs should have been cut down a bit and it could have done without all the callbacks to the SYL days. Overall though, a good album that is at it's best when it is the most progressive.

The album title really speaks to the album's theme, as well as Devy's musical journey at this point, where letting go of some of the control has opened up new soulful avenues of expression instead of merely spinning his wheels like the last couple of albums. This is peak Townsend right here, and for me his best complete work since 1997's Ocean Machine album.

Many people compared this album to Devvy's older solo material, so it makes sense that I wouldn't like it [that much] given I've been a much bigger fan of his DTP material. Some of the tracks are fine, but other pieces just sound like b-sides. Maybe on the next album he shouldn't actually let the other members have a say, and just do it all himself again. He seems to be more successful that way.

Completely massive. Plays like a sequel to Synchestra or Accelerated Evolution and masterfully blends Devin's ultra cheesy prog sensibilities with Addicted-era pop and metal. Easily the best DTP album since the original quadriollogy.

Transcendence is best described as a combination of Accelerated Evolution and Epicloud. It's bombastic, choirs and reverb are abound, and the songs are, barring the "Truth" re-record and the title track, structured as pop tunes. In that regard, the inventiveness and daring of something like Terria's "Mountain" or "Deep Peace" or Ocean Machine's "The Death of Music" is absent. However, it's got a few of Devin's best non-Casualties tunes since Ghost ("Stormbending," "Failure," the title track) and the production (particularly the drums) is superb. I also like the return of closing track ambience connecting the songs (a la Terria). Also of note: there is a higher guitar solo quota on here than any of Devin's other releases, besides Terria. There are some dud tracks (the bland "Secret Sciences," the cheesy "Stars"), but this is certainly the DTP's best since Ghost.
