Ever since I discovered this album, I have worshipped it. I listen to it 10 times a day and then proceed to masturbate to my Mike Patton shrine while shoving 10 Charleston Chews up my ass and then lighting it on fire. I have been slowly growing deaf ever since I started this sequence of ritual and each day I am closer to being a dead goon from the scars of flames embedded on my ass. But it is worth it, and once the sequence is complete, we will enter a new era of peace worldwide as everyone spends the rest of their lives giving indecipherable conversations while trainhopping inside of an egg. Rate this a 5 now or you'll go the way of Stubb A Dub. And I'll do it with much love! Love is a fist, after all. 10/10

A shocking and potentially appalling album after a first listen. It might sound like a mix of unconnected noises and screams but give it some time, enough focus and you will learn to see the patterns and mind blowing melodies which are the evidence for an amazing musical talents of Mr. Bungle.

This has to be one of the strangest albums that I have ever listened to. Mike Patton fuses together funk, jazz, death metal, ska, circus music, and punk all together to create on hell of a ride. Every song lasts from about five to ten minutes long and while listening to each song five or six genres will be exposed. Patton will be screaming into the microphone over heavy guitar riffs and a few seconds later the music will change into jazz or funk. With Mr. Bungles s/t there are no rules and although the album can be to much to handle at points it's worth it if you want something unconventional or unique.

I've heard some weird shit in my life. I listened to a song about gay cowboys getting fucked (Ram Ranch). But this is close to the top, and it's fun on every scale. While it is long with the samples put in, and, yeah, the sound is very taboo. for many people. But if you introduce them to like "Carousel" or "My Ass Is On Fire", then they might see some of the charms. The many different instruments, the unpredictable change of genres, and the clown vocals from Mike Patton deserve the title of "Best Avant-Garde" album to ever exist!

Holy fuck is this eclectic. In fact, too eclectic. Mike Patton combines everything from Metal, Ska, Punk and Funk to Jazz and Orchestral music. The performances are great, but in the end it is just too much imo.

This album is delightfully wonky, as one would expect from the works of Mike Patton. There's some jazz, some funky beats, some cacophonous terror noise type of shit, this album encompasses so many genres while unifying it into one fun, albeit wild, ride. Would be a 5 if not for that 30 seconds of diarrhea sounds but I mean you can't have everything in life.

Easily one of the most off-the-wall, bizarre records ever released by a major label (indeed, the only reason Bungle was signed in the first place was due to vocalist Mike Patton's involvement in Faith No More, who were at the height of their popularity around this time). Mr. Bungle is an eclectic mish-mash of death metal, circus music, Captain Beefheart-esque sample work, and funk rock. This unexpected conglomeration works-- extremely well-- due to the spirited performances, intelligent if unconventional songwriting, and flawless production (by fellow musical gadfly John Zorn). The lyrics, too, are phenomenally, disgustingly brilliant ("Squeeze Me Macaroni"). One of the best records of the '90s.

In 1991, Mike Patton, Trey Spurance, Trevor Dunn and co. were hell bent on giving you a tour of their carnival. You undoubtedly know a little bit about this carnival already; that it's flashy, loud, fun, and outlandish, even if a bit amateurish. Beneath the surface, however, lies something more sinister than they initially show you. I mean, just look at these lyrics. The topics covered include domestic violence, pornography addiction, various taboo fetishes, heavy drug use, animal cruelty, and even the meaninglessness of many aspects of life. Carnival doesn't sound too fun now, does it? They want us to know: life is like this carnival. It's this strong emphasis on thematics and concept that lets us know, while there was undoubtedly some immaturity in the songwriting and pacing of the record, that Mr. Bungle was a band ahead of their years. It would only be until they perfected their craft that the full realization of that notion would be made.

Experimentation is a new field for me. With that said, I CAN wrap my head around using samples and other non-conventional instruments in place of music. This album has music all over the place for those who are curious and does have some good points. However, I personally cannot give an album a higher rating that uses samples that are better off not used in place of music (esp on Track 2 or 3).

A little less consistent than California (not necessarily in a structural sense, more of in a thematic sense), but still a solid album by someone who has yet to at least interest me with every least. 4.1/5
