Yes, I'm well aware of the fact that most artists cutting their teeth on the airwaves would kill for the ability to be instantly recognised when their tunes kick in. Be that as it may, in 2016 it feels as if the Chili Peppers have been clapping kits[now hands] and slapping strings and riding boards since the rearrangement of the Yucatan Peninsula. Add the uncompressed baggage, courtesy of Danger Mouse, in order to contraband a couple of piano notes, some soft synth backgrounds and a lady--and we're bamboozled! I mean, will you tap your foot, once or twice, along "Dark Necessities"? I mean, can you imagine Flea grooving around in his undies on a quest for Ritalin, and Kiedis chopping innuendos or cucumbers or something, while he spews words, cities, you know which state, and lately whole countries such as Mexico in an effort to appropriate rhyme? I mean, can you survive Lalaland 106.7 until the next big hole in the ground? Well, it's a bummer either way 'cause they will.

"Dark Necessities" is a killer single and "Dreams of a Samurai" ranks among their best work with some great drumming and keyboard work, but the rest of the album either pales in comparison for me or is forgettable, though not bad

It really is their best since Californication. Love the subdued production and atmospherics of Josh Klinghoffer's guitar work.

When I'm With You was released in 2011, it gave off the impression that the Chili's were bored with it all, as the album wasn't offensively bad, just very boring and apathetic. The Getaway manages to rectify some of this, but unfortunately also falls victim to the same indifference that plagued its predecessor so. On the good side of things, the lively instrumentation and backing vocals that begin the album on the opener/title-track bode well, and things come to a head on the final minute of "Goodbye Angels", which is the best thing the band has done in a decade. There are flashes in the pan here and there throughout the record, so I can't say they didn't pace it well. That said, there is simply far too much generic, ultimately snooze-worthy material on this record to call it a rebound effort. I can't tell you how many times I had to replay a song because I forgot what I just heard. Maybe that's on me, but I come across this problem with few records. In truth, The Red Hot Chili Peppers did improve and show a good amount of effort, but not enough to make The Getaway a good album.

I found this album to be much more interesting than its predecessor I'm With You. This is not because The Getaway includes great tracks but because the band appears with a different perspective here in terms of the sounds and the band's style. They are not ultimately funky or aggressive, but rather more mature. Klinghoffer starts showing what he can offer to the band, Smith plays some interesting drum patterns and Flea's bass lines are as good as ever. Recommendations: "Dark Necessities", "Go Robot", "Goodbye Angels", "The Getaway", "Encore"

it's your typical red hot chili peppers album: some amazing tracks - especially the singles - mixed with truly boring, outdated and out-of-place ones. still, a step forward in the good direction. 3+

Much better than both Stadium Arcadium and I'm With You. Klinghoffer finally sounds like a pepper (unlike on i'm with you). The album is cohesive, fresh and immediately funny to listen to. Melodies are very catchy and musicians are extremely skilled, as always. Danger Mouse's production may sound a little weird (typical of Danger Mouse), but it is well integrated for the Peppers' sound.

Similar sentiments as others here. Loved the band's discog through Californication...then it went south real quick. Slow to slow/mid tempo adult-contemporary light funk? I gave this one listen then tossed it in disgust. Sad to say I'm done with this band. I'll still listen to some old stuff from time to time.

Going off the three songs that were released prior to The Getaway's actual launch, funk rock warriors Red Hot Chili Peppers had gotten a tad inspired again after the boredom kingdom that was entitled I'm With You. With the absence of Rick Rubin and Vlado Meller, I felt as if this was for the better because of reasons far too obvious to elaborate on. Now that I've finally listened to this California-based quartet's eleventh full-length album in its entirety, it's safe to say that The Getaway is an improvement over its predecessor. The record exhibits overall less hackneyed production values courtesy of Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) and more comfortable instrumentation, especially from guitarist and backing vocalist Josh Klinghoffer. Don't misunderstand, however: these Red Hots have encountered a fair share of issues with this one. The flaws mostly revolve around how unsteady the compositions are alongside frontman Anthony Kiedis, who continues to give a generally unenthusiastic performance; man, you're in your 50s and all, but at least try anyway. By and large, Red Hot Chili Peppers have concocted a rather fine summertime affair that can boast its moments of excellence amongst a bridge that carries fine, so-so, and terrible (i.e. "Go Robot") in but one package. A step in a relatively right direction. Angel recommends: "Dark Necessities," "Goodbye Angels," "Encore," "The Hunter," and "Dreams of a Samurai". Give it away now!

Goodbye Angels has the coolest ending ever. I love that song. Not a perfect album, Go Robot is awful, but the rest is either cool or just forgettable.
