Sweet soul sucker, Chelsea Grin's fourth full-length album is evidence that the band's 2012 EP Evolve was a fluke on their end. Released in 2016, Self Inflicted is quite the downgrade from the Salt Lake City-based deathcore act's past two releases; compared to this record, both the aforementioned EP and Ashes to Ashes had much more going for them, even if that's not saying much overall. Mostly awful compositions, laughable lyricism, and Alex Koehler's deteriorating vocal performance screw over what could've at least been an otherwise okay offering. Self Inflicted's last two tracks and "Strung Out" are relatively stronger than the rest of the album, although they aren't exactly excellent tunes by themselves either. If personality had a mug, then it would have a Glasgow smile - and that's no pretty sight.

Sadly not as offensive as Emmure, but not much more interesting than them, either. At least Emmure have brocore chugs that are kind of interesting, whereas this band kinda just djuns the whole time in a way that's somehow less interesting.

Chelsea Grin continues on, clinging to the same old uninspiring breakdowns on the deathcore/metalcore checklist. I'd give them points for sounding more melodic than their last release but they manage to even fuck that up with some pretty awful lyrics.

To be quite honest, Self Inflicted is not a total disaster. Chelsea Grin is a band that strives on delivering poorly crafted breakdowns and childish lyrics. Every release is a new hope that they can improve, but none of that materializes. The point now is in your own enjoyment, because knowing that the band will not look better than it is, you should evaluate for the level of entertainment you will have listening to it. In my case, a below-average rating lives up to that job. Nothing disastrous, but nothing to be remembered in the future.

That record just makes me sad... It's definitely heavy, but it's not as good as Ashes To Ashes or
Evolve EP. If lyrics were the only aspect of rating musical albums, Self Inflicted would easily be
the worst album of the year. (Given that Attila and Emmure probably won't release their albums in
2016)
Fortunately, some tracks are good (Skin Deep, Scratching And Screaming, Broken Bonds and
Clickbait, if you can forgive it's lyrical content and enjoy some mosh sound), vocals aren't
great, but aren't awful either, and it does provide some fun. Probably because me likes some
Emmure.
But overall, I'm disappointed. Hope that their next album will be better. 2.3/5.
