1.0 awful | Trebor. EMERITUS | June 27th 16 | Where are Matt Skiba's vocals? This is fucking bullshit. We're going to have less Alkaline Trio in the world because of this crap. How can he not get even a single song to himself?

0.0 | Idleness | May 5th 16 | 1. "brohemian rhapsody" is so off par for a band that said "i wanna fuck a dog in the ass" yeah totally dudesr2. Blink have taken the radio friendly path so they'll sell more records? the band has been a complete marketing machine since enema with the intent of making radio friendly music, and are one of the largest selling bands of all time. If you think blink are just now selling out, you are probably way too young to remember when blink was at the absolute forefront of culture.r3. Album will be mediocre yeah

2.0 poor | ACMA13061 | April 30th 16 | The short three chord sunny pop punk of the 90's has truly gone. Blink have taken the radio friendly path so they'll sell more records. It's all good, but I'll stick to Mark Tom and Travis Show.

2.0 poor | cjbizzlebizzle | August 24th 16 | After a couple of plays California will have you wondering why blink-182 even bothered making another record. There are certainly shades of the once great pop punk band in this album but the feeling of forcing themselves to do this and trying be funny ends up taking all of the fun out of the music that blink-182 used to deliver borderline brilliantly. The 42-minute experience ends up being longer than it should be and most of the tracks are built on the same general formula. The formula is not a terrible one but when you take away the silly, spontaneous edge and lyrics that captured the so-called best years of your life blink-182 really just isn't the same. Spotless production only adds to the radio-rock feel of it all and instantly one should just go put on Enema of the State to clean out their ear tracts.

2.0 poor | MrGarland | June 30th 16 | Where's the love? Where's the consistency? I'm not surprised though. Skiba is out of his element, and Mark lacks any inspiration or innovation whatsoever. It's kind of sad that Blink is just a cash cow now.

2.5 average | FamousAtticus | October 26th 20 | An average disappointment. Listen, no one wanted to see Tom DeLonge depart but getting Matt Skiba
as a replacement sounded heaven sent. Matt is a masterful writer, just look at all of his
analogies/metaphors throughout his Alkaline Trio catalog. Damn was a I disappointed when I started
hearing the singles come out one by one. Its like Mark set out to create an album for high
schoolers that missed out on Enema of the State when it came out. The content just didn't resonate
with me. I feel like he just pulled Matt along for the ride. The direction Blink was going in
after their self-titles, Neighborhoods and Dogs Eating Dogs EP had me optimistic...then this
happened. I hope Matt darker side shines on future Blink albums (the backend of Nine was a slight
improvement). The highlight of this record was the song "6/8" which was released in the deluxe
version.
My favorite tracks off the record (in no order): No Future & Bored To Death. 6/8, Bottom of the
Ocean & Last Train Home (deluxe edition)

2.5 average | SymbolicInTime | June 30th 18 | At the end of the day, there are a few songs definitely worth a listen, such as Rabbit Hole and Bored to Death, but this album, sitting at 16 tracks, just isn?t worth sitting through for a couple good songs. The majority of the album does nothing but leave the listener, at best, indifferent, and, at worst, annoyed, due to bland songwriting, generic production, and missed opportunities.

2.0 poor | socat | October 8th 17 | very disappointing coming off of neighborhoods and their self-titled album
Bump |
2.0 poor | BoatJones | September 28th 17 | The title of the lead single is very fitting, because this album bored me to death, and this is coming from someone that used to be a huge blink-182 fan. It's too poppy, there's no fun riffs, and all of the songs pretty much sound the same. The older blink albums have heart and soul, and their self titled album is one of my favorite albums of the 2000's, but California is just radio friendly bubble gum boy band pop garbage for the kiddies. I knew this band wasn't going to be the same without Tom Delonge, but I didn't think they'd take this big of a nosedive.
Bump |
2.5 average | StrizzMatik | April 1st 17 | Well I guess this is average stuff. The band is not the same without Tom, the song writing is lifeless and bland, and Skiba doesn't get enough of a spotlight to make this any more than a +44 record with Matt Skiba.

3.5 great | c0nf1n3d | July 15th 16 | Given the drama cloud surrounding the production of this latest record, Blink-182 ultimately succeed in producing a fine album. "California" injects the 'fun' side that was sorely missing on the previous record "Neighborhoods", as well as having a numerous amount of catchy songs. Unfortunately, it's the mixing/editing that hurts this one - as the vocals are clearly pitch-corrected to being 'flawless'. Some of the songs such as "She's Out of Her Mind", "No Future", "Los Angeles", "Left Alone" and especially "Rabbit Hole" are solid song compositions that won't leave a listener's head. On the contrary, hearing 40-somethings write about being a teenager comes across as too ridiculous, especially in the song "Teenage Satellites" - which is Blink-182 playing a Boys Like Girls song. Finally, the title track oozes cheesiness beginning to end, and being essentially the closer to the album - just doesn't cut it. Overall though, solid effort.

1.5 very poor | ConcubinaryCode | July 11th 16 | The song titled "Bored to Death" is an apt description for this record. For as how heavily California relies on hooks and choruses I've never felt so disengaged from a blink album. The moments that stick out most is when they sound like they're playing their old material when they were more interesting but that just makes me want to listen to their old shit. It doesn't help that this record sounds like it had its teeth whittled down to a dull surface essentially killing any power it could have.
Bump |
2.5 average | zaruyache | July 7th 16 | Too much pop, not enough punk. It's only 42 minutes but with 16 tracks it seems much longer.
Bump |
3.0 good | 3waycrash | July 6th 16 | California brings back the simplified, summery pop punk, radio-friendly sound. It doesn't reinvent, but does it need to? Would love to hear the band take things further into a more evolved sound, but for now this is a refreshing and fun listen.

4.0 excellent | JimIntegrity | July 2nd 16 | I had absolutely no expectation for this record and to be honest I didn't care. Bit by bit however my interest peaked, Matt Skiba gets announced as Tom's replacement, Some of the clips they posted in the studio sounded interesting, Bored to Death' really got me excited. rThe record is awesome.rCatches the essence of Blink from all corners, whether thats the upbeat tracks to slower moments or the silly lyrics to the more mature lyrics. Its the best the band has sounded for so long. Its a band not trying to sound young but not sounding like old men. It balances everything out perfectly. Drumming is especially is outstanding as to be expected. My only bad point is it would have been nice to have more Matt than Mark though.

0.0 | TheSwagguBear | May 10th 16 | Just heard Bored To Death. Blegh. And after Neighborhoods I was sure the next album would become one of their most mature outings; all in spite of Neighborhoods' melodramatic and overly self-aware (especially from the standpoint of expressing their more mature side) form of building connections with listeners. Not to mention the overall inconsistency of the record. Well, if the rest sounds like the single... ahem. CAN YOU SAY: MID LIFE CRISIS?! .
