2.8 good | Erwann S. STAFF | May 19th 22 | Kinda lazy this one, especially 21 Savage. His delivery is monochrome and apart from whining, he doesn't put that many emotions into his vocal deliveries. Metro's nocturnal beats are aight without being amazing because of their lack of bomb-ass-thicc-ness, yet he clearly is the one carrying the tape - even though Future is da real MVP with that fire feature.

3.0 good | Bedex | May 26th 20 | Far better instrumentally and vocally than an of his prior work, yet still feels like it struggles to hit home. 21's delivery is very lazy and laid back, which works for some tracks but is a bit tiresome and flat over the long run. When he does get more intense it works really well, like on the jammy 2's first half, but he hardly ever builds up in intensity. The use of autotune on 9 freshens things up nicely resulting in a chill trap track, but it's a bit too little too late since the track closes the (intelligently short) tape. From the very opener you see that the gimmicks (pew pew skrrt skrrt etc) are still there but in far smaller quantities which is great to see, and that the instrumentals will rbe nice, broody and nocturnal. 3 is the last peak track here, with Future's sporadic but much welcome contribution and a generally intimate atmosphere that you wouldn't expect from a dude with 21's persona. 4 has great instrumental but makes you wish 21 would whine less. 5 just passes, and 6 has a really cool intro. 7 is the hardest hitting track in that half of the record and is quite cool although the repetitive midtrack is annoying. 8 has a nice subdued instrumental but feels a bit contrived. Even though this is a lot better it doesn't feel strong enough to be in 3.5 tier, because besides No Heart it mostly makes me want to check Future's discog and not 21's. 3.2

4.0 excellent | Risodo | March 14th 18 | I have always looked suspiciously at the work of 21 Savage for his controversy, and his widely unpleasant and devoid lyrics. But in "Savage Mode" what saves the structure of the musician's music is the beats and production work, which is consciously and well elaborated. Maybe i have given a very high rating for this record, but i cannot deny that i not enjoyed listening to the beats and sound turns of this record.

4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | September 12th 16 | Dark, minimal, almost zombified trap from the mecca. I don't know what it is about Atlanta and why it continues to birth some of the most prominent faces in trap, but I'm certainly not complaining. The beats Metro provides on Savage Mode are some of the darkest he's made, but also some of the most imposing and threatening as "No Heart" and "Mad High" will show you, providing the perfect backdrop for 21 Savage. The guy sounds so barred out and disillusioned that the impression he gives, one of a man so tired of and used to the dangerous and paranoid life he leads that he's grown emotionless and cold, comes across very smoothly and most importantly believable. It's really great to hear a rapper-producer collaboration like this that features both performers at a high level and both performers complementing themselves in ways that just wouldn't be there if one were to be replaced.
