Magma sees Gojira not only turning their past weaknesses into strengths, but also turning them into a new way forward, one that was certainly needed after L'Enfant Sauvage. The Shooting Star, the title track, and Pray are all highlights as well as perfect examples of the more primal atmosphere the album as a whole adopts, especially during its second half. Those who had fears that the band was becoming overly simplistic due to the singles have nothing to worry about, either. The style is simpler, but the album has much more substance than the singles suggest.

A slower, more deliberate Gojira that make their punches poignant. There's a certain Gothic charm to this album that's not really present on previous outings and though many elements of Gojira's style are instantly recognizable, there's a tangible difference between Magma and previous outings. But where L'Enfant Sauvage started to see the band's well of crushing, groove-centered ideas drying up, Magma is an undeniably fresh and interesting direction for the band.

Probably Gojira's most interesting record, i've heard it 5 or 6 times so far and it's an experimental and melancholy filled journey. My only complain is that it's a little bit short.

Gojira seem to have forgot how they got to where they are today. Magma is a restrained version of the sound they were beginning to perfect, While still having the Gojira feel, it lacks the power and aggression we listen to Gojira for.

It is very good. Some tracks seem to be memorable mid listen, but I couldn't sing any part just by the name. These tracks would be The Cell, Only Pain, Pray, and Low Lands. The two instrumentals provide nice atmosphere and character to the album. Magma has a cool harmonic riff that provides nice atmosphere as well. Suffers a little from lack of memorability.

Some great ideas and some really passionate performances. It really feels like Gojira wanted to explore new ideas with this album, but I can't help feeling like those ambitions weren't fully realised. Great album regardless.

Not quite as good as their last few records before this. Not because of any lack of
heaviness, but because many of the riffs, guitar work is starting to sound stale, and the
heavier elements themselves sometimes just don't quite hit like previous records. Atmospheric
stuff has been added in, which brings some diversity, there's plenty to enjoy here still.
Liberation at the end is essentially a nice / pleasant filler track, good for an audiophile
to test his headphones or speakers to but pointless. I like elements of the sound they're
moving toward, vocally the kind of cleans Amazonia on the following has could raise this a
bit. I appreciate that they keep evolving as time goes on. I know people wanted to shit on
this and Fortitude, mainly saying "go back to your old style" but you could tell that style
was running short of tether, and besides, Terra Incognita & The Link showed some elements
that are being explored more here & onward. Mario is always brings the heat drumming, and
gets to sit more front and center than ever.

Definitely a great album, it lacks, however, that inspiring feeling of From Mars to Sirius. That's really the only way I can describe it. Stranded and Silvera kick ass though.

Magma represents even further evolution in the complex career of Gojira. Long gone are the spastic and mechanical feelings brought on by their first three albums only to be replaced by more emotion and simpler songwriting. The most important thing about Magma is that it still remains one-hundred percent full blown Gojira. Their identity has grown so strong and this album continues to exemplify the mastery that the Duplantier brothers have crafted around heavy grooves. This is probably the least heavy and technical album from Gojira yet but that seems absolutely purposeful and they have chosen to weave instrumental complexity into simpler, yet amazingly powerful songwriting. With their sixth album in fifteen years, Gojira have grown into a metal monster without losing their identity despite their music being as friendly to a wider audience than ever. You simply can't go wrong with this group up until this point.

"Silvera" is cool, but besides that one (somewhat) high point, this is just such a snoozer. Gojira go for shorter, marginally less aggressive tracks here, and it sounds like, well, watered down Gojira. Aside from these lukewarm metal efforts, "Yellow Stone" is a bizarre, underdeveloped "Dawn Patrol"-esque instrumental interlude, and "Liberation," the closer, is a pleasant but also rather empty and one-dimensional instrumental.

After a few listens, it finally solidified as my 2nd favourite from these guys. The album still riffs pretty hard but the band have found a way to space out and simplify their sound in a way that not only turns the music more somber than they've ever been but also creates a wall of atmosphere that they've never had before. No longer the album to head bang to; now the one to get lost in.

After the first two singles, I was really excited for this album. I was honestly a bit disappointed by the end of it. The album lacked any kind of real aggression, it just sounded flat and boring if I'm being completely honest. I'll listen to it again in a few days, maybe my opinion will change.
