2.5 average | FlipTrackz | May 12th 16 | The Shadow Side shows promise. Andy Black has one of the most distinct and enjoyable voices in the AP music realm, yet Black Veil Brides Achilles heel has always been the cringe filled lyrics. Unfortunately this problem bleeds into Andy's first solo effect. Voice is great, production is (overall) well executed but the lyrics drag this thing WAY down.

2.5 average | Jared Floryan | May 10th 16 | Under the moniker Andy Black, this Black Veil Brides vocalist provides our ever so inviting world an overall satisfactory solo debut in The Shadow Side. As far as anything Biersack-related is concerned, it's relatively refreshing at times and does boast a nice amount of catchiness, which is most prevalent in numbers such as "We Don't Have to Dance," "Put the Gun Down," and "The Void"; by the way, these are what I would call the best tracks off here. The positives stop there, however, seeing how Andy ends up leaving an unimaginative first impression in the long run. The archaic nature of this record coupled with its schlocky lyricism prove to be The Shadow Side's undoing - and that's a surefire sign that improvements have to be made come future releases. Mostly solid hooks can't quite make up for vapidity.

2.0 poor | zaruyache | September 24th 16 | This a 2.5 purely due to its aesthetic appeal--which is to say, it gets points for sounding clean
and inoffensive, but it doesn't provide much more on any level. This is a pop rock album
and it does as pop rock does; power choruses, dumb ballad-y junk, dance-able pop tunes, whatever.
I've heard it before and I've heard it done better by the likes of Britney Spears and Bon Jovi.
It should lose [more] points for being so painfully generic, but its aesthetic appeal helps it
keep its head above water, but only barely. And I didn't even mention Andy's awful vocal
technique.
edit: "We Don't Have to Dance" keeps getting stuck in my head for no reason after hearing it only
a few times in total. Bumping down the rating appropriately for obnoxious ear-worming.

2.5 average | Toondude | May 7th 16 | Given the constant mockery that Black Veil Brides gets, it's at least commendable for Andy Biersack to at least attempt something different in comparison to his other works. However, despite a few decent moments, The Shadow Side is ultimately an empty and forgettable affair that borrows the same elements from other and more popular pop artists out there, and is most likely not going to change your mind about Biersack in general.
