| 5.0 classic | Lewis EMERITUS | February 2nd 17 | An album ahead of its time by virtue of its tardiness. We are too late; nothing to do but wait for drone bombs, execution, hopelessness. Fuck to "4 Degrees," laugh at "Obama," consider yourself above it all; turn off the news. You're a piece of shit. ANOHNI is a piece of shit. Daniel Lopatin, I don't know, he probably sucks too. Hudson Mohawke can definitely get bent. A peculiar album where every song's a ballad without a single track functioning like much of anything, just all escalating synths and battering rams and pluvial music beds. Party like the doomsday clock's at 11:59.

| 2.0 poor | cjbizzlebizzle | August 24th 16 | Hopelessness starts off with two memorable tracks but beyond that there is not much about this record to write home about. The production and beats on the album are the saving grace and at times fantastic but the blunt, hard to swallow lyrics do a great job counteracting that goodness. Sure, pairing extremely political lyrics with sometimes almost ironically upbeat music is not something found on your everyday electropop album but the lyrics never end up being eyeopening or even convincing. Sometimes they are downright bad; much of 'Obama' and 'Execution'. There is potential in the ideas behind Hopelessness but unfortunately the album is bogged down by poor... execution.

| 3.5 great | colejaeger | May 16th 16 | The singing and production are really good, and I like the album's reconstruction of pop/dance music, but some songs suffer from overly obvious lyrics that don't really make interesting points. "If I drone bombed your children how would you feel" waah waah. Saying Obama a lot on the track "Obama" distracts from what I think is one of the most interesting songs sonically. For the most part, ANOHNI makes surface level observations about the country. It's a good listen overall but I have to try and neglect some of the lyrics to fully enjoy it. Highlights for me are Drone Bomb Me and Why Did You Separate Me from the Earth?

| 3.0 good | Erwann S. EMERITUS | January 16th 23 | ANOHNI's HOPELESSNESS would have been an uninteresting synthpop record carrying heavy political lyrics, but thanks to Oneohtrix Point Never and Hudson Mohawk, the soundscape remains somewhat interesting.

| 3.5 great | nukethewhale | October 19th 16 | I find the lyrics as cringeworthy as much as the next red-blooded Bud drinkin' American male, but something about the
unique voice coupled with the stellar production make this record an intriguing listen.
I Don't Love You Anymore and Why Would You Seperate Me from the Earth on paper don't really seem like something I
would particularly enjoy but they're quite good.

| 4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | June 9th 16 | Melodramatic martyr and political abridger, perhaps -- but between the curiously sumptuous throat-throwing via emphatic trans protagonist, the 'bama bashin' as we near his term-termination, and the pointed roundup of harrowing happenings heard (and not so heard) 'round the world, let's call it a snide snapshot of cultural currency; a summary of discernible disheartenment as we move closer towards said term-termination and the future at large. Though they certainly don't make for the most insightful of dialogues, the topics alone give it a welcome weightiness; Hudson Mohawke's overzealous boom-bap production finally feels complementary, and together with spacious-glitcher Oneohtrix Point Never they form the kind of damaged electro-epic rushes that are fit for the spectacle of mass animal extermination and the tearful regret of drone-bombs and torture, the could-be hooky pop hits that poke fun at surveillance and highlight the hypocrisy in capital punishment. The album title is telltale: this is no call to arms. She doesn't give a shit what happens to you and don't care 'bout herself much neither, oh and humanity is not only headed for armageddon but rather deserving of its wrath. The sort of rash+direct idealisms we're not worthy of living up to, I s'pose.
