An underrated, worthy successor to Aja. Love the first three tracks, but especially the byzantine "Glamour Profession," which stands as one of Steely Dan's best songs. Side two is a little spottier, with "My Rival" being one of the weakest things Steely Dan ever released, but still very listenable.

Let's say that Gaucho is a middle-aged woman who used to be quite a looker. Instead of coming to grips with her age, she simply tries to bury her wrinkles under an ever-increasing mound of skin exfoliation products and make-up. All these products do, however, is make her look worse.
Some Dan fans love to talk about how 'smooth' or 'groovy' Gaucho is. You wonder why they use these adjectives? These are the ONLY words that can be used to describe this album. Nothing else resides in these tracks--Gaucho has no soul left under the laboriously-applied mascara.

This album definitely deserves better than a 2, as the 2 reviewers have rated it. It has an overly sterile quality to the production (in large because of the drum machine "Wendel") and one of the only mediocre tracks Steely Dan ever released, My Rival, but it's full of the interesting chord changes, lyrics, and grooves which define the Dan's sound. Babylon Sisters and Glamour Profession are especially outstanding tracks. Then you have the famous Hey Nineteen, which is like a futuristic spin on 50s music (foreshadowing Fagen's album The Nightfly). I like Third World Man too. One of the most melancholic tracks they ever did. Now, if only this album had The Second Arrangement or The Bear on it.
