Old school metal fans always struggle with more complex song structure . they hate time signature and this album is by no way a rock n roll album or some straight forward metal album ! the album is a grower but it's take time

A restrained, incohesive collection of tracks that, when added together, amount to very little indeed. There is little sincerity in the arching cleans as they reach high and dig down low, and there is scarce instrumental flair to catch your ear. It is a smattering of very safe songwriting wrapped in the guise of a well-produced, thoughtful record. Be assured, though, that The Fall of Hearts is deceptively simple; a facade of thoughtfulness that quickly collapses when looking for anything that truly has substance.

I am surprised by the divided reception, though each is entitled to their own opinion. To me, this is their best album to date. With the line-up changes, it feels as though the band has renewed creative energy in this album. Though I do miss Daniel's subtle style, the new drummer really respects the old and injects some new style into the percussion. The album itself (imo) is also their most ambitious album to date, exploring a more proggy Katatonia. Honestly, the last few albums really felt a bit tired to me, following in the footsteps of TGCD , and didn't do much to add anything new to the Katatonia songbook (don't get me wrong I really do like DEK and NITND). However, this album features some of the bands best songwriting, at times songs stringing together into one cohesive song. Thus the album is quite consistent; I like/love pretty much every song on this album.

Katatonia finally went and did it. Ever since the huge transition that took place between Tonight?s Decision and Viva Emptiness, Katatonia have been threatening to just take their music to its atmospheric progressive metal conclusion.

Katatonia, looking at their whole body of work, is a band made up of several micro-evolutions that take place in between each album they make. The differences are small, but they're noticeable enough to be heard, and when these changes compound, the band looks entirely different from what they did when they began. In the case of The Fall Of Hearts, it takes the progressive leanings of Dead End Kings even further than before, and continues to make use of crisp melodies, moody atmosphere, and solemn, if a bit monotonous, vocals. Acoustic interludes that have a nice amount of work put into them, strings and pianos permeating the tracks, and a surprisingly excellent drum performance make the record very enjoyable to listen to, though many of the songs do sound similar to the one that came before it. The stretch that begins at "Serac" and ends at "The Night Subscriber" is genuinely incredible, and is up to par with the best of their music from this period. In short, it's another swell Katatonia record with more subtle and endearing variations.

The Fall of Hearts brings to mind the image of a thickly dressed figure coming home to their cold and fragile house. Walking in feels no different, as if the short rustic walls had played host to the enveloping cold all day and night, week after week. An indoor fire to melt the shivering veins would be heavenly, but alas, the only source of heat is the shower--its water capable of reaching some miraculous temperatures. Were a bystander to look upon this person, undressing to relieve themselves, they?d see a figure in shadows, the kind that feebly walks upon city streets before collapsing beneath old black garbage bags. It isn?t until this figure enters the shower that the filth upon their body becomes apparent: water greets the body clean and clear, but bathes the floor thick and dusty, like mud. As the heat rises, their coldly contaminated skin is simultaneously pierced and relieved. Yet the water which falls to the floor remains black and brown, thickening in density as time moves on.

The loss and addition of some key players has barely had an affect on the pure class that this band emits from album to album, mainly due to the rock solid team of Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström . A more mature and progressive effort than their last, and another crowning achievement in their near flawless trajectory.

This album is a grower and when I read that I didn't believe it from what I was hearing. But I
was wrong. Just posting this in case some are scared off by the negative reviews.
Have been jamming this almost everyday. It's hands down the best Katatonia album. Every song is
basically perfect, Sanction grew on me, Pale Flag is a bit slow, Passer is killer but I tend to
skip it. Every other track, especially Decima and Residual are good listens. Last Song before the
fade, "My memories are deleted film" "You came back but so did I".. The bassline in Shifts... The
breakdown in the night subscriber(especially double bass over quiet guitars). The way takeover
builds. Serein intro. Serac especially when it chills out. "See you rise like the tide" Serac is
probably my most jammed. Old Heart Falls is like an instant classic song about Europe. Also,
really like Vakaren and think it should have been included on the original track list.

It's really a varied album, no doubt about that.. it feels like certain songs could have been on DEK and going back through their discography, it pretty much covers thing since LFDGD. If you're listening to it chronologically, it really lacks a flow, from one song to the next; which can make it feel disjointed and lack immediacy of previous albums. However, that's okay with me because each track stands on its own as a monumental memorial of their "art" (with minor exception to Serein and one other that slips my mind..). It's not a perfect Katatonia album and only time will truly tell how it stands next to their extensive back catalogue. I think the main observation and impression with me here on Fall Of Hearts is the musicianship, production/mix and songwriting in general. They have truly mastered their own craft at this point - what will be REALLY interesting is where they go after this. Favorite tracks: "Passer", "Decima" and "Fall of Hearts". r

There's nothing objectively bad about this album, but I personally got a bit bored with it being over an hour of softer tunes. If you can get behind this type of music, you'll surely love this record.

Competent performances and production, but this is-- I hate to say it-- boring. Mostly boring, anyway. There are some fantastic sections ("Takeover," "The Night Subscriber," "Passer") but the songwriting is unsatisfying, and it's all rather lukewarm, due largely to Jonas Renske's one-dimensional vocals. He has a great voice, but he hardly pushes himself here. Overall, The Fall of Hearts is a disappointingly incongruous and meek listen.

Right from the beginning the first three tracks give you pulsing verses, catchy choruses, and great background atmosphere. The meat of the album is towards the end. I found this album to be much better than dead end kings, and matching the brilliance, if not exceeding that of Night is the new day. I'm honestly perplexed as to how some reviewers are giving it 3's or less. I guess people don't appreciate great music anymore.

Fantastic production let down by some some lacklustre song writing that seems like a jam session
without much cohesion (see first 2 minutes of Takeover), this type of aimless wandering making
for longer songs leaves the listener simply bored. However there are some fantastic moments
sprinkled throughout. The more direct songs definitely steal the limelight. Perhaps Katatonia
might be better off making a more shorter album in the future that focuses on their strengths
rather than expansive nothingness.
