definitely the worst emery album, but still not a bad record. it definitely tries to be another "the question" and misses the mark.

I may be in the minority here, but I'm Only A Man isn't that bad. While it does lose some of the personality that Emery had on The Question due to the curious purge of vocal harmonies and the dip in lyrical quality, it's still a passionate and sometimes very catchy affair. Where the band really deviates from their established norm is that the album is quite inconsistent, in stark contrast to The Weak's End and even The Question. The highs here, like "Story About A Man With A Bad Heart" and "The Movie Song" are as good as any song they've don't up until this point. That said, "Don't Bore Us, Get To The Chorus" is as obnoxious as any song they've done as well. There's distinct peaks and valleys here, which are usually kept to a minimum on their records. All this said, I'm Only A Man is a decent effort from the band, and is not nearly as bad as people would have you believe.

After releasing the amazing The Question, to come out with this?? I honestly thought Emery were done. There are a couple good tracks on this albums but overall it's trash. Thank God, they came out with In Shallow Seas We Sail next, which just might be the greatest post-hardcore album.

Emery, why have you forsaken me? I used to be a huge fan of yours! What on earth spurred the tremendous changes in your direction? What about the interesting song structures? The simply lovely vocal harmonies? Where has the poetry, the deep meaningful lyrics gone?? Why would the band that wrote 'The Secret' write 'The Party Song'? I'm sorry, but I actaully liked having to sit and think about what your band was trying to say via song. There is no subtlety in your lyrics anymore.

Though it's not Emery's greatest album to date, it is still something worth checking out if you've enjoyed their past records. Having parted ways with a guitar player, their sound has developed into a more balanced band with no instrument seeming more important than another. With the exception of "After the Devil Beats His Wife" (meaning explained in DVD), the track names seem tacky like they were made by some emo kid thinking he was clever. The DVD also includes live footage with the bands current roster, and it gives you insight into how the old material sounds without a second guitarist. This is an album for die hard fans, and would be a terrible album to introduce Emery to someone who has never heard them. Another thing that just seems odd is the lyrical content, which at times lacks maturity. For a band that has been together for so long and are approaching their 30s, I just find it odd that they still focus on such angsty stories that at times appeals more to a younger audience.

Easily the worst album I’ve heard that was released in 2007. Right of the heels of their great, prior release, The Question, Emery abandon’s nearly everything that made that album good and focuses on its weaker characteristics. There are lots of more moody tracks that stray away from rock and emphasize more pop characteristics much like on The Question’s “Miss Behavin’.” I’m Only a Man is filled with very poor attempts to create popular sounding music and catchy hooks with tracks like “The Party Song” and “Rock-N-Rule.” While the last few tracks slowly start to build up some captivating momentum, it is too little to late to save the album. Though it doesn’t have any songs that are particularly terrible, nothing in it surpasses average quality. I’m Only a Man is a 48 minute bore-fest that is in no way worth looking into unless you’re a die hard Emery fan.
