Tarja was fired. She had it coming. The new girl isn't like her but she still fits the bill. This album is epic and dark. If you don't like it, go BAW about on your MySpace. Leave the judgement to those who actually know something about music.

While the departure of Tarja from Nightwish in late 2005 was a deep gash in the hearts of fans a many, Annette more than fills her shoes. While her voice is nowhere near the operatic beauty of Tarja, Annette's voice has its own unique sound and tone. While the melodies may not immediately convey her range, some of the harmonies show Annette's ability to belt some notes that pop stars of today could only pray to reach (i.e. Amaranth). With my praises, for lack of a better word, praised, Dark Passion Play is not without its flaws. Tracks like, "For the Heart I Once Had," are painful to my ears, and not because they're bad. It seems Tuomas has yet to learn Annette's comfortable vocal ranges, as her vocals sound so strained that I can practically hear her vocal chords praying for mercy. All in all, Dark Passion Play is not a new direction for Nightwish, but it is not a complete flop as well. Fans: give a chance, a good hour of listening, and accept that Tarja is not coming back.

They should have changed their name. As far as im concerned it's not Nightwish. Nonetheless the album is not bad. It still succeeds in being operatic and powerful, but not because of the vocals, do not expect the same qaulity put out by Tarja. Marco's vocals aren't as good as they used to be either. But the album still succeeds overall containing an epic feel throughout and a style change is not bad. We had almost 10 years of Nightwish with a a very constant style (not a bad thing) and we got alot of amazing albums, I think its a good thing it's different. Don't immediately discredit it, it is still a well made album.

So... this was at first a 5 for me (Nightwish fanboy, what can I say), then a 4.5, then a 4, and now it's a 4.5 again. Some tracks on this are pure classic, while some can get very annoying at times (guess I'm still not used to Anette, her vocals can get on your nerves sometimes).The band is great as usual, the symphonies are fabulous, and you gotta love the Celtic influences.The best tunes are The Poet and the Pendulum, and The Islander(check the video it's pretty cool).

looking back at "Dark Passion play" aside from the opening track the rest of the album is..just fine. it is a whole lot more "pop" then i remember.

Nightwish is a gothic-influenced symphonic metal band I really wish I knew more about. They seem to be all the rage due to Tarja Turunen's classically-trained vocal performance and the manner arrangements are played out; I'm not entirely sure if these are reasons the group is hailed as the way they are, though it seems plausible enough. Dark Passion Play's heavenly page of contents eventually becomes only slightly stale, yet for what the record is, Nightwish did an impressive job on this material. The orchestral elements combined with the guitar work dips in and out of excellence territory, while Anette Olzon's (this outfit's frontwoman after Tarja and before Floor Jansen) voice is melodically beauteous, if just a bit flawed. While this offering is far from perfection, its existence of replayability can't be denied.

Despite loosing their best known member - or, perhaps, because of it - Nightwish still manages to release an amazing album. While Anette does sound a little off in the higher ranges, and some songs are a little mediocre, the rest of the album makes up for it.

I think this is one of the greatest albums, not just for nightwish, but ever.rAnette's voice is superbly cultured and she gives her 10/10 and toumas has made good and efficient use of a broad spectrum of instruments.rThe poet and the pendulum is the best song on the album. But the rest do not disappoint.rI see the poet and the pendulum almost as a trailer, a preview as to what's upcomming on the album. its almost a summary of what you can expect on it.

The Poet and the Pendulum and Amaranth are fantastic tracks; however, the rest of the album, while not inherently bad, is simply wearisome to listen to (and not in the challenging way of a work that takes several listens to fully absorb). There have been quite large disagreements about the change in vocal duties prior to this album, and well I think Tarja's vocals suited Nightwish better, there isn't really anything wrong with Annette's, either. The songwriting is just so lackluster, overall. But those two aforementioned tracks...

It's hard to hear a Nightwish album without Tarja, but Annette Olzen, despite being merely decent, brings an acceptable voice to the table. When judged properly (on its own terms), Dark Passion Play is a solid album that has some moments which show the band as still-masters of symphonic metal. However, this isn't to say that it's shortcomings are easily dismissible. The unfortunate truth is that, for every great track we're given one that leaves little standing impression. There's still definite potential for an album that matches Oceanborn, but the end result of Dark Passion Play merely reminds us that it might not be for some time.

I don't care for this album.... the more I listen to Nightwish's other stuff the more this one gets worse. It's not Annette's fault either. Peot and the Pendulum is the best track, and the only really good track. I think it's lacking keyboards. Toumas kind of back off in this album and I don't like it. The guitar is main in the album, other then the keybaord like in the others. As a keyboardist myself the lack keyboard bugs me alot (as you can probably tell). Other then having a lack of keyboard the album has some of the worst Nightwish songs ever, including Sahara, and For the Heart I Once Had.

Although Nightwish still made a great album without Tarja Turunen, the magic vanished from their songs. With Nightwish's new found voice, Nightwish sounds like a band trying too hard to make it big.

Although the firing of Tarja Turunen was a disappointment to most Nightwish fans, many have breathed a sigh of relief that Dark Passion Play didn't need her operatic style to make it fantastic. Anette Olzon, although completely different in style to Turunen, is a fantastic vocalist in her own right. Dark Passion Play, regardless of who the vocalist is, is a fantastic album and a must-own for any Symphonic Metal fan. It starts and ends epically and beautifully, with Poet and the Pendulum and Meadows of Heaven opening and closing the album respectively.rTop 3 songs - Poet and the Pendulum, Bye Bye Beautiful, The IslanderrBottom 3 songs - Whoever Brings the Night, 7 Days to the Wolves, Sahara

I prefer this album over anything that Nightwish have done that I've heard, the reason is Annette Olsen's vocals. Tarja made Nightwish sound more classical & over the top, while Annette is a vocalist that makes this band more suited to my liking of music. Although I do like the musicianship of the other members when Tarja was around in Nightwish, they purely own on this album. Would The Poet And The Pendulum sound as great as it is with Tarja singing it? I don't think so

Nightwish is still on top of the metal scene. It's no wonder they have miilions of fans the world over. It's only a matter of time before they become even bigger. The new album is already double platinum which means that they have been doing something right over the years. I do miss Tarja very much, but their new singer does have an very nice vocal range. She and Marco carry the album throughout along with the incredible orchaestration and metal sounds. This album goes so fast even though it takes more than an hour to listen to the whole thing once. The Poet and the Pendulum is the most listenable 14 minute song I've ever heard and is just perfect Nightwish. It's a great intro and forshadows much of what is coming next. Master Passion Greed is another mind-bending, headbanging song worthy of fame. The rest of the world needs to discover this incredibly poetic, powerful symphonic metal band in order to achieve some transcendence in their lives. If you don't know Nightwish yet, you'd better!
