| 3.0 good | PappyMason | April 2nd 16 | While critics can (rightly) find fault with Mind of Mine's lack of originality and the adolescent nature of Zayn's lyrics, one cannot deny the sheer beauty of the production that can be found here. Working closely with producer Malay (Frank Ocean), Mind of Mine succeeds in fusing together elements from several genres to create a cohesive downbeat sound, one that feels distinctly personal. While it would be nice to hear Zayn do more, vocally, to assert himself, the dream-like haziness of his vocals really adds to the album's sound. Ultimately then, Mind of Mine is a solid, enjoyable album that showcases a young artist with a lot of promise. I will be watching his career with interest.

| 1.5 very poor | literallyzach | February 16th 17 | I forgot this album existed until about five minutes ago but damn it is some terrible stuff. He is trying so hard and it does not work.

| 5.0 classic | smashmouth | April 13th 16 | Mind of Mine is a stellar debut effort from Malik. The album showcases his soaring vocals over impeccable production. A major step away from his previous work with boy band One Direction, Mind of Mine hues closer to the beats and atmosphere based music of the likes of Frank Ocean and The Weeknd. Zayn knows precisely when to sing at full strength, and also when to pull back- creating a vocally versatile album. It is a cohesive body of work that lacks filler tracks; each song adds its own unique flavor to the record. Malik even includes "Intermission: Flower"- a song sung in his native language, Urdu, in its entirety. The sheer impact of such an inclusion should not be overlooked. Zayn's complex identity as a biracial British-Pakistani Muslim, along with his reserved and soft-spoken nature, accounts for the intrigue and mystique surrounding him as an artist.

| 3.0 good | dihstyle69 | March 25th 16 | i really want to like this album. there are some great moments here and there and zayn's vocals never allow boring beats to completely ruin a song. the problem is that he borrowed too many elements from other artists - frank ocean, miguel, usher, nerd, xx and many more - and it lacks the personality needed for a debut album to truly shine. the lyrics and content can run a bit stale towards the end too. i see potential though, so i'm expecting him to drop something way better in a couple of years from now, much like timberlake did. nice debut but not what it should've been.. 2.5
