4.5 superb | bgreen5 | April 30th 16 | this is the first Aesop album I've listened to and its solid. Beats are super cool and his flow just feels so natural and effortless. Definitely going to have to check out some of his earlier stuff!

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | August 17th 16 | Bars are anti-generic, defiantly daedal, and constantly enthralling; and he's got enough of 'em to handle the whole sans guests. A word-wiz wonder-man whether he's blathering absolute absurdities or molding said absurdities into meticulous yarns that are keen, personal, comical, even pensive: there's the neck-tatted kid at the Baskin-Robbins who makes him feel hoary as hell and half-hearted bout his own body art+its creators ("Now some 22-year old inside a cube of brick and mortar / Got me questioning my morals and their corny pecking order"), the 'specially standout story of one estranged brother's ballgame-impeding gopher and another's letdown after mom won't let him see Ministry, the acknowledged defects and resultant kitten of psychiatry ("When you start getting all exact and algebraic / I'm reminded it's a racket not a rehabilitation"), the blunt bashing of a prominent quote ("Knowing ain't half the battle / That's a bullshit quip written by some asshole"), this ("Airhorn airhorn airhorn airhorn"). Oh and he also found the time to bust out the beats too -- those lively, heavy, funky, eerie, beats.

3.5 great | Erwann S. STAFF | October 23rd 19 | Skillful delivery and witty lyrics with nice - from time to time abstract - beats. Really good but nothing transcendental for me.

3.5 great | objectivity is not my thing at all | July 11th 18 | good writing with some great beats and some really cool and pristine stuff aesop does in terms of his rhythms/flow. everything is produced/mixed fantastically, aesop blends in perfectly, every song is a good story told in a great fashion. only qualms would be what I'd consider filler in the middle of the album, but it picks up near the end. solid listen

5.0 classic | Rodstar | January 2nd 17 | A late 2016 discovery that stormed up my list with constant playback since I first heard it. This dude's flow is like honey from the rap gods, the beats and production are tastefully conceived and his lyrical attack sounds as if he eats the thesaurus for breakfast on a daily basis. It also helps that every cut is a slice of his personal journey through his 40+ years of life and the nostalgia is palpable.

3.0 good | cjbizzlebizzle | December 29th 16 | Aesop Rock seemingly has an excellent mix beats and signature impressive vocab flow on The Impossible Kid, a mix that could be classic. The beats combine both loud electronics and pure instrumentation. The lyrics tell life's stories with just about the entire Merriam Webster on display. So what is wrong here? How is this not the best hip album of 2016 or an instant classic? The individual elements just don't combine into a truly memorable experience. Most of the songs sound very much like the last and there is a glaring absence of memorable hooks, despite this being his "most accessible release yet". That and the fact that it is 48 minutes of Aesop filling bars with complex, voluminous rhymes and no guest spots; it seriously gets tiring after word #10000. Good but an album that struggles to have many memorable songs that one will look back on after a few years. If you are not a huge fan of his sound, prepare for 15 tracks that rest on the same laurels.

4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | June 8th 16 | Aesop Rock is a pretty polarizing fellow, mostly stemming from his lyrics. While some praise them as interesting and fun to decipher, others lambast them as nonsensical or needlessly verbose. Whatever the case, The Impossible Kid is territory only barely charted for the San Fran wordsmith. With his most upfront and confessional lyrics yet, and a collection of instrumentals that harken back to early 2000's El-P while still keeping a personal edge to them, the record is much easier to digest than any album of his before it. Though easier to understand, I'd be lying if I said the songs were straightforward, as they're decidedly not, but the story-telling here is wondrously vivid and the wordplay is sharp. He takes the listener on a personal journey of his hometown, his important memories, and his makeshift home in a barn far away from the city, a place that he stayed for one year while composing this record. At the end of it all, the listener knows the man better than ever before, motives, feelings, and all.

5.0 classic | FlipTrackz | May 12th 16 | Aesop Rock's most accessible, most personal and catchiest album to date. Great beats, great stories, and great flow from the king of underground hip-hop.

4.0 excellent | Jared Floryan | May 2nd 16 | Designed by freelance artist and writer Alex Pardee, there are quite a few words I can use to describe the cover for Aesop Rock's The Impossible Kid: dark, bizarre, personal, and also very nostalgic. Though it's easy to see why people might get turned off by Pardee's general style - especially if one doesn't hesitate to recall Hot Topic - the illustration fits super well with the material on display from both a musical and thematic perspective. New York-based rapper Aes' seventh full-length record is both entertaining and additionally intelligent enough to justify additional listens, and while some tracks on the album prove to be weaker than others, The Impossible Kid in its entirety is an experience that shan't be forgotten. My score might go up in the forseeable future for sure. Angel recommends: "Rings," "Dorks," "Blood Sandwich," "TUFF," and "Water Tower". The people over at Rhymesayers are funny dudes.

4.0 excellent | NewBallistics | April 26th 16 | Aesop Rock comes back with another golden album to add to his trophy room. Rock's menu includes some messier production, more minimalist instrumentals and lyrics staggering down a thin line between genius and insanity. So if this isn't your thing, best avoid it.
Also, an hour-long re-imagining of The Shining accompanied by an Aesop Rock album. Beautiful.?

4.0 excellent | dihstyle69 | April 25th 16 | easily aes' most accessible offering in a while and, honestly, his best next to labor days and his last album. full of dark, raw, intentionally unpolished and nasty beats and creative, abstract lyricism, he created a very personal tale worth exploring. 4

3.5 great | Panzerchrist | April 25th 16 | Not in love with the muddy, minimalist instrumentals, but pretty pleased with Aes's general flow and (of course) lyricism. Nice to see an emcee known for his brickwall abstractions go for something a little more direct and much more personal.
Edit: Kirby's a slapper
