V- Halmstad is only a black metal record by the loosest stretch. Progressive black metal may be the best tag for this, and purists are going to absolutely hate it. Shining actively combat stereotypes and standards within the genre, and whether or not they should be applauded for it depends on your idea about the black metal scene. What they deliver with V- Halmstad is a black metal album for people who don’t really like black metal, but have always sort of wished they would. It’s heavy, it’s vaguely intelligent (musically- lyrically the translations I’ve been able to find are hilariously bad), and its got the ability to make you rethink your hate for an entire genre. Then again, Shining probably would want you to say “Fuck black metal” anyways.

This album rips, Besvikelsens Dystra Monotoni is a beast. My only complaint is that some of the guitar solos are too long/technical for my taste, less guitar hero moments would have worked better.

Decent to mediocre instrumentation and riffs, topped with annoying and juvenile vocals. After the novelty wears off it's hard to ignore just how lame Kvarforth's antics are.

This is not a black metal in the sense that it blasts away at a thousand beats a minute in order to create a chaotic atmosphere and nor does it need to. Instead, this album broods on the deepest and darkest emotions that a human can feel and conveys these feelings through one of the most tortured voices in all of music. The amount of emotion Niklas conveys in every single song on here is unparalleled. Then, when it does switch up into a true black metal segment it reallly does kick ass but this is rare. The solos are another great aspect of this album, carrying with them a huge amount of amazement at how any band on earth could be this talented. This is a dark and depressing trip into the human mind, but one that everyone on earth should take at least once. Soem of the shrieks that Niklas lets out defy belief.

The most emotional experience ever recorded. Shining really did make a masterpiece with their seminal fifth album, Halmstad stands out as the best depressing/suicidal black metal album ever recorded with some haunting tales of the most dark corners of the human mind coupled with Nik's tortured vocals that reflect real pain as opposed to the faux pain heard through most bands.

The most intense and emotional experience of all time the vocalist on this album sounds as though he is ready to commit the acts mentioned. This is the darkest most horrific form of torture i will ever actually recommend to someone, it is an experience just to hear it. This is true agony if it has ever been recorded and really is worth a listen but will most likely have an affect on one mentally
