Honestly, this is just getting better with each listen. I can really seeing this becoming a 5 in the near future. Julie Christmas works so well with Cult of luna's style of music.

With songs like 'a greater call' the julie/COL mesh up works well, but with songs like 'chevron' we get Julie's signature out of key shouting while COL desperately try to keep up. It's a bit of a mess, and those parts sound very irritating. Disappointing, but respect for trying something different.

Just one listen and I'm already blown away, CoL easily leave all their competition far behind.
Despite disliking them at first, the female vocals really give this more uniqueness.

A space trip. When leaving the dreadful place you once called home, you are full of wonders, only to understand nowhere is truly safe. But you do not realize such a thing until you are forced to wreck into the cold black infinity. In the end, this descent into madness shall only be shattered by this soft but grasping self-realization: you will die alone and drifting in the dark. What a peaceful way to leave.

Absolutely massive and enthralling. One of the best uses of female vocals in metal. Julie
Christmas input notwithstanding this is already a fantastic CoL record with brutal riffs,
excellent song constructions, and vocals amongst the best. Julie is a incredibly clever addition
to their sound and brings a touch of madness, making the record sound like a lunatic witch ritual
with powerful imagery a la Dead Magic by Anna vH. This freshness and originality is amazing from
these masters of the genre, and this may very well become the CoL classic album I've been looking
for. I have to say the second half did not feel quite as good on first listen, and 'The Wreck of
S.S. Needle' is a bit of a weak point, but hell yeah this rocks. 4.6
Edit: same except SS Needle is a good track, the low point is track 4 whcih drags on a bit and
maybe the second half of the closer. Still 4.6

and what incredible vibe this one has...insta 4.5 for me...all tracks are really something...this Julie female front vocal sounds amazing in the genre, looking a bit possessed...Cult of Luna keeps the good shape m/ beautiful beautiful partnership. The only thing I could point out on COL is the harsh vocals all the time...that ain't no issue here. Climaxes are built perfectly. All tracks are pretty damn perfect.

Whilst I have always been a fan of this band, they never quite reached the level of grandeur for me that ISIS did, but here with the addition of the banshee wails of Julie Christmas, they seem to have added a dimension to their mammoth wall of sound that they were somehow missing. I don't know if this is a one-off experiment with her in the mix, but Mariner is certainly the best album of their career for me because of it.

Mariner seems like a tale interweaving two separate subplots. On one hand you have Cult of Luna who come off as lacking effort and putting out rock solid sludgey post-metal riffs that sound like they have been done time and time again, even by CoL themselves. The music comes off as too polished at times and rather predictable. On the other hand you have Julie Christmas, new to me, who provides an extra dimension to this experience and seems to be putting in a ton of effort. At times this effort is too much and she sounds like she is trying way too hard to stand out and be quirky-crazy. At times this effort is just right and she compliments the music to perfection. She allows this album to be more than just a post-metal greatest hits riff collection that replays in your head for 54 minutes. The production and musicianship pull back at this and skipping around the album it is very hard to tell you have even changed songs at any given moment. If the songwriting here was more interesting this combo of players could be beyond greatness but for now it is just an album for Cult of Luna enthusiasts and those who absolutely love atmospheric post-metal sludgeness as it was like ten years ago. Try the Julie heavy songs first like SS Needle and Chevron because you will A) Find out if you hate her style and B) Hear something that doesn't sound so gruelingly familiar.
