3.6 great | Erwann S. STAFF | January 3rd 23 | With Slow Forever, Cobalt delivers an everything-metal record: black, sludge, prog, crust, hardcore punk, or folky interlude intertwine instead of simply following one another. It's way too long for my rotten brain (85mins phew), but it's constantly engaging thanks to dynamic musicianship and vicious vocals.

4.0 excellent | Mordaunt | November 28th 16 | It smells and sounds exactly like... black stoner.
How lovely!

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | July 4th 16 | Dropping the twelve-track double-disc bombshell not as a flow-focused vehicle for some visionary concept, but cuz they simply seem stuffed to the gills with vehemence, vitriol, and riffage. Of course their penchant for patience positively plays its part in this 80+minute pelt-fest as well: severe savagery packs just as much a punch as the extended grooves and exactitude, and for all the snarls and screams and mosh-motivator grunts and double-bass demolitions there's steady+studious buildups+transitions and reprieve in the form of desert-folk forays+an all too tru analysis on first-world writer problemz. Remarkable in its ability to capture the stalked-buffalo beast-whip buried-elephant animalisms they allude to, sure, but more treasured is their exceptional conglomeration of heavy+catchy+curvy with performances that are electrified and invigorating as fuck, frankly. Xtra points upon learning that Erik Wunder plays all instruments on this thing. As in, the guy both ripped those riffs and decimated those drums. A Wunder, indeed.

4.5 superb | marf1300 | July 2nd 16 | I avoided this album at first because I generally don't like black metal. But after listening to it, I thought this was AOTY (until I listened to Terminal Vortex). Now I just think this is an amazing album. Get ready to hear some atypical influences for a metal album.

4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | June 21st 16 | Slow Forever is rarely that. Sludgey and black, Cobalt deliver a massive amount of content in their comeback album after a seven year gap. Harsh and scratchy high-pitched shrills with a hardcore vibe blend smoothly with a primal sludge atmosphere that incorporates elements of progressive rock (Tool really comes to mind), black metal and even punk, which can be heard in the vocals and guitar riffs. Double LPs often run into trouble with content becoming diluted where the truly memorable moments are left between too much filler... Cobalt does not have that issue here. They use several interlude tracks, vocal samples, acoustic sections (some which have a great Western sorta vibe), tempo drops and breaks from the intense vocals to keep the album from dragging on. At times it does feel somewhat repetitive but their excellent formula keeps this from being a tragic flaw. Seemingly energized by a new vocalist, Cobalt has come out with a vengeance and a blend of sounds that any metal fan would be truly mistaken to pass up on.

3.0 good | stagemaster | June 1st 16 | Has some very good music in it for the most part and is as heavy as it should be - every time I listen to the album I fall even more for it. But I just can't stand the vocals; so scritchy and trembly it puts me off. Maybe it's just me but it's definitely worth a listen.
