Strange how a post-drugs, now-married with children Max Bemis could release a more whacked-out album than his past self could have ever thought of. Definitely the most unconventional and experimental Say Anything has ever sounded. While initially abrasive in sound there's more to discover with further listens. Instrumentally it's actually great, but what makes this a challenging listen is the lower production and Bemis's performance. He's as passionate and energetic as ever, but he prefers more of a shouting vocal delivery rather than singing which doesn't always work. Along with this the improvised lyrics are gibberish and a bit nonsensical. Max set out to destroy any notion of feeling blase about music, and he does succeed in that sense with an unorthodox album. It's not as instantly likable or gratifying as other Say Anything albums, but it has its moments. Definitely the most divisive album Say Anything has released to date, and they've released their share of albums that have split fans.

Say Anything come out of left field with a new record, and you know what; it's pretty good. Bemis
hasn't been this aggressive (and weird) in a long time and it's nice to see that he still has it
in him.

Album title might be a very obnoxious and very late reply to The Strokes debut, an attempt to justify the trashy-lo-fi vibe of the production. Many might not look past the atrocious underlying motto behind that decision- but if for whatever reason a particular stubborn listener like myself would care to put this to the test of repeated spins it can ultimately deliver some memorable moments.

From the album art to the production quality to the song themes and structures, it seems like Max is trying
incredibly hard to come across like he doesn't give a shit anymore and to produce the rawest and edgiest record
that he can. Unfortunately this, to me, has the opposite effect as intended, as through this effort it becomes clear
that he does care, or at least creates the impression that he does. Consequently the 'I don't give a shit' ascetic
looses near all of its appeal. What's left then is a record of the most experimental and unconventional songs Max
has ever produced. Whilst it's wonderful to see such experimentation the songs, for the most part, just don't
sound good. The vocals are the most passionate I've heard from the guy but the awful production combined with
the bizarre and unenjoyable song structures and styles makes this a chore to sit though. Sorry Max, this is worse
than Anarchy.

This record is mixed like shit.
Now onto the pros:
Some pretty good songwriting, Bemis and crew are pulling off many interesting stunts on here, like incorporating hip-hop inspired beats and sampling into their sound. If I'd have to over-exaggerate like I'm doing all the time anyway, I'd call this record "Say Anything by way of (Edit Cherry Bomb". At least it sounds that daring to me considering the usual demographic Say Anything's brand of (Pop-)Punk appeals to. On surface level its themes may be centered on some friend of Bemis called Joshua, but its overall message is about opening up to yourself and making changes in your life to finally get comfortable within your own skin, just like Bemis giving up his iron grip over Say Anything to finally find out he's capable of having fun doing music with friends. You know, like real bands do.
And I kinda love his sincere approach on here.

The opening track had me worried but I might honestly love this album. It's been a while since an album made me want to listen to it again immediately after it finished. Favorite tracks so far are Attaboy, and 17 Coked Up Speeding. Very raw and bizarre, and I'm glad to say that Max has definitely still "got it."
