This Unruly Mess I've Made or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Spoon

At the very least, This Unruly Mess I've Made is the most aptly titled album of the year so far. And, in some ways, it's fascinating. Musically, this is everything I love and hate about this pop-rap duo cranked up to eleven. Which means that, simultaneously, they're both at their best and at their worst at the same time. That by itself is messy enough, but it's compounded when you consider this notion: that this album is what happens when a pop-star realizes he shouldn't have been one, yet still tries to carry on as one. Fame affects those that revel in it in negative ways, sure, and that has never not been a topic to discuss in music. Yet, Macklemore is less well off than most in this regard. He knows next to nothing about handling fame. This album, for better or worse, represents that, and results in both the best music he's ever created ("Light Tunnels", "Buckshot", "Kevin") and the worst ("Dance-Off", "Bolo Tie", "White Privilege II"). As such, this album is the definitive hodgepodge of the year so far for me.

You know... Upon having heard This Unruly Mess I've Made in its 57-minute entirety, this hit me: if I had a choice to be reincarnated as a full-blown wigger or a sentient Sunkist, then the latter would be way more my thing. There's far too much bad throughout Ben Haggerty (a.k.a. Macklemore) and producer Ryan Lewis' 2016 studio album that outweighs whatever good is on display, sadly. The otherwise decent production values when put right next to "Mackerel"'s ultimately cheesy, laughably indifferent flow result in a pop rap disaster which proves longer than it has every right to be. Unlike the walrus, This Unruly Mess I've Made can't keep anybody warm.

macklemore tried to create an intentionally messy album to see if people would buy into the idea but the end result just feels like a boring, lazy af mess. terrible in pretty much every front. 1.5+

I've got a soft spot for this album. The production is on point as usual and most of the tracks are, above all else, a lot of fun.

I never understood why does Macklemore and Ryan Lewis put their albums together the way they do. Every single heartfelt, emotional and powerful song is almost immediately replaced by some easy-going silly "let's have fun" kind of track. Like very self-conscious Light Tunnels is followed by a song about mopeds and so on and so forth. I'd be personally happier if they had just released all the silly and humorous songs and all the serious ones from here and their debut as two separate pieces, otherwise it more or less destroys any kind of momentum for me.

When Ben isn't talking about dumb topics or being plain out corny and gets more serious this album is pretty good its just some of the dumb songs in between that ruin the mood set by every good song you do get. I don't even hate all the goofiness of some of these songs i actually kinda enjoy Brad Pitts Cousin but most of them are just too over the the top lame. Production on this album is pretty good for the most part. Some great guests like KRS one and Chance the Rapper do a great job but you also got some bad features like YG, who do very eh and really weren't necessary to have on the album

Compared to their debut effort, The Heist, this collection is a mess. Aside from Downtown, the duo seemed uninspired and made a true mess, which is what the album name describes perfectly.: This Unruly Mess I've Made. But also, clumsy.

The album is boring, and the parts that try to sound more exciting - outright horrible. Listened to it once, and felt absolutely no desire to revisit any of the tracks ever again. Not my cup of tea (I did think the singles were trash too, so I guess my reaction is expected)
