The newly added synth parts and crisper production literally made this album a whole lot better. Was hoping for at least a few songs re-recorded with Michael Lessard.

This is how you do a remaster; differentiate the instruments more, clean up the mixes and add in elements that flow organically with the originally established material.
If you were looking for an entry point to the Contortionist's discography, or just want to give it a re-listen, this will most definitely deliver.

Like all the Contortionist's albums, Exoplanet (the original) grew on me the more I listened to it; in fact, Exoplanet is one of my favorite albums of all time. When I first listened to this I had no idea they had re-mixed it, but I discovered they did almost immediately. Needless to say, I like it but I don't. I fell in love with album for what it originally was and even though I still really like some of the minor adjustments they made, I dislike the "drowning out" of vocals and guitars. If they would have left the original vocals and guitars alone, I'd be more approving. So all in all it's an interesting twist but I don't believe it's totally necessary.

I must admit: I am a flip-flopper. Only a few weeks ago I was saying how I thought this album was fairly average, overly reliant on chugging and somewhat unoriginal. Well, I always give albums a few chances. This one wrestled with me more than any album in recent memory. At first it was the vocals: brutality with a wide range of style dipping into pure gloomy death, thrash and harmonic cleans. Then it was the riffs: jarring, unsettling breakdowns between spacey technical leads and semi-groovy grind licks. The chugging is plentiful but the high quality makes me want to unleash my inner beast and/or hide on a corner. The overall mood of the album is a lonely and disheartening one and I find the ratio of brutality to harmonious melody to be particularly on point. The first six tracks here are all borderline excellent while I find the band loses my attention in the latter third; the only reason this isn't a superb release in my eyes. Less of a blend and more of a layer cake of deathcore, djent and prog elements, Exoplanet explores galactic themes and creates a lonely, uneasy mood to match. Bonus points to the vocalist as his effort alone makes it worth the listen. Flourish, Expire, Contact and Vessel are all fantastic starting points.

a good album now made excellent. production sounds cleaner, instruments stand out more and overall the remakes of every song is superior to the original.

Bass up + synths = cool shit for sure, but I feel it's at the expense of the vocals and guitars. It feels compressed, and I'm not a big compression fan. Touche Amore ruined Dead Horse, Converge magnified You Fail Me, and this one (along with Cynic's Traced in Air) falls into the "hey it's good, but I prefer the original" category.

While overall it isn't a huge amount of change in respect to the original, the adding of some synth parts and bringing the bass up further in the mix is definitely a welcomed change and makes the album feel a little bigger than the original.
