Seems to me that many people can`t understand very specific allurement this album has. This is definitely one of most important death/doom records ever made. And you know what? This is real Anathema for me and they should have changed their name when started to play alt rock.rEdit: Anyway, I like also latter Anathema, maybe I was angry of low rating their debut has got, so... it is OK like it is.

Anathema's debut sounds nothing like their later work. Aside from the soft, female-vocal driven "J'ai Fait Une Promesse," the interlude "Scars of the Old Stream," and the 23-minute ending ambient piece "Dreaming: The Romance," Serenades consists of crushing death doom metal with a distinctly hopeless atmosphere. There are wonderful passages (the end of "They Will Always Die") but some of the tracks don't go anywhere (opener "Lovelorn Rhapsody"). Still, it's not bad, and it shows that even in their beginning stage, Anathema knew how to conjure an atmosphere.

Anathema's debut album is an interesting one, it certainly has some great moments and ideas, though their execution is not that good in my opinion, some tracks are boring and drag a lot (Lovelorn Rhapsody, They Will Always Die, Under a Veil), some others are effective and grabbing (Sweet Tears, Sleepless, Sleep in Sanity) but in resume this is a hit and miss record for my taste.

I came for heavy metal, I guess I just looked in the wrong place. The album name maps out this album perfectly, and i'm not too pleased with what was handed to me.
