4.5 superb | Alabaster Jones | March 25th 16 | I believe that, among other things, No One Deserves Happiness is The Body's study of irony. Ironic how something as thick, bleak, and uncompromising as sludge/drone metal can yield moments of beauty and even catchiness. Ironic how a couple of nihilists are helping to ensure that their accomplishments won't die. Ironic how an album with the title it has actually makes me, and I'm sure a lot of other sludge fans out there, happy. Why so? Because, as usual, The Body's malleable and deconstructionist take on doom, drone, and sludge metal really packs a punch, as well having the perfect little subtleties that add so much personality and texture to their music. Take for instance the choir of beautiful vocals in "Prescience", or the jarring power electronics of "For You", or the tasteful use of 808's on "Two Snakes". It's moments like those that make No One Deserves Happiness such a captivating, interesting, and thoroughly entertaining experience. Oh, and Chip King's vocals still rule, in case anyone was wondering.

0.0 | emester | March 16th 16 | A spectacular deconstruction of popular music. The way The Body meld the abrasive and shrill noise of sludge
metal with syrupy atmosphere and dreamy female vocals creates an experience so fresh that the compromise of
the two styles is quite more sonically challenging and rewarding than either on their own.

4.5 superb | TheManMachine | May 7th 16 | Call me a sucker for the juxtaposition of the beauty and the beast, call this the explosive execution of such a thing: the most apparent attribute being the guy+gal vox-ers; or rather, the perpetually incomprehensible tortured mutant screamer+halcyon-n-mighty possessed-at-church hardened women who can crank it up a notch or three if needed. Then there's the perdurable pummeling of impossibly mammoth sludge and deep-n-dense din layers and industria-tronix threatening to engulf your entirety, spawning an aura of terror so towering and torrid that it enraptures and induces awe rather than sending ya runnin' for the hills. Dispositional sum-up steamily/plainly stated whilst comparing contrastable parents and the derived traits of their kid: "You wondered how, being so different, they could've formed a uni0n", "a mixture of the violence of the one and the gentleness of the other". Personally, being a mere 90 miles away from these heathens is both edifying and alarming -- and as long as they keep dishing it out like my father, I'll gladly take it like my mother.

4.1 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | December 19th 19 | No genre label could do them justice. This is pure emotion in its noisiest and helliest format. It's tribal, raw, abrasive, obtuse as well as dangerously addictive. The horror the male shrieks convey are only matched by the sense of grandeur of the female chants. If there ever is a Hell, I hope I'll be greeted with this album. The sound of impending doom.

4.5 superb | Bedex | February 12th 19 | Exceptionally bleak and abrasive. A unique album with a peculiar horror-esque feel.

4.0 excellent | thurs | October 18th 17 | An esoteric, adventurous romp featuring experimental fusions of a variety of genres on top of a fairly robust, sludgy skeleton. This album eschews visceral sadness, instead embracing something that is far, far removed from any planes of existence that could ever come near happiness. It is suffocating and can be difficult to listen to at times, but a rewarding experience nonetheless.

4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | August 23rd 16 | No One Deserves Happiness is not an album that I visit very often and one that often invokes the question: "Why don't I listen to this more?" The answer to this is simple: This album is a somewhat harrowing, albeit beautiful experience. Rooted somewhere in the pits of hell between sludge, drone, industrial and pop this record provides an amazing, memorable atmosphere. Screeching death screams contrast soothing clean vocals, gainy industrial bass rides a wave of electronic percussion and entropy ensues. No One Deserves Happiness brings the listener to many different places all while forging a sound of its own, which is worth praise in its own right. It is obvious that an album like this won't be for everyone but tracks like Wanderings, Shelter is Illusory, Two Snakes, Adamah, Starving Deserter and Prescience deserve a listen from anyone seeking dark, fun and unique music.
