4.0 excellent | dihstyle69 | January 16th 16 | always truthful to his roots, anderson .paak released an album that solidifies him as one of the most talented r&b artists of this new generation and it will be on many top 15 lists by the end of the year. his last projects were just hints of talent and here, he fully explored his potential. he should've never released this during winter, though. 4-

3.5 great | charlopiano | November 19th 21 | I think Paak is an amazing musician, I quite like his songwriting too, but I think he's a subpar composer, that's why I like him so much in Silk Sonic and that's what brings down this record. But there are some amazing songs on there. Especially the dreamer.

4.1 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | January 31st 20 | That's some sexy and warm neo-soul right here. Paak, like Kendrick did in 2015, summarizes black music in the 2010s: Malibu takes influence from soul, R&B, funk and hip hop and delivers a groovy and soulful record to toke some reefer to. The versatility of the genres allows the record to flow well, even though it's a tad lengthy in the middle. Production-wise, this is a beaut, as Paak surrounded himself with top notch producers (Madlib's at it again), without forgetting to do some of the job himself ("The Bird"). All tracks are lush and full of details, which makes Malibu both an immediate album as well as one that lets itself discover after multiple listens. When it hits, chillness prevails. Roll that shit, light that shit smoke it.

3.5 great | TheManMachine | February 9th 16 | Fresh off his particularly illuminated guest-work on Dr. Dre's 'Compton', Paak delivers a full-n-flowing semi-filmic experience of his own: one whose bonafide and infectious old-meets-new soul&b uber-warmth is oft-mated with/accentuated by retro surf-talk samples and bittersweet familial nostalgia. Sure, the sustained breeziness it suffers from transforms to tiresome sex-corn now and again, there's some standouts yet it never really peaks -- but when instrumental suavity is this sumptuous and consistent, those very well may be non-issues. Plus he's got some hip-hop chops and is able to make jumping into bed with him sound nothin' but playful; Miguel could learn a thing or two here.

4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | January 28th 16 | Anderson .Paak, who generated some buzz after providing some of the better vocals on Dr. Dre's thoroughly-covered comeback record Compton, has two of the most important gifts as a vocalist, especially in neo-soul: it's immediately recognizable, and also immediately enjoyable. This, combined with the sunny and chilled production, make Malibu a great sophomore effort. Highlights include a wonderfully personal split track with "The Season/Carry Me", "Without You", which is essentially a reworking of Hiatus Kaiyote's "Molasses", and features an excellent verse from Rapsody to boot. The album does suffer a slight bit from longwindedness, but for the most part it is a nicely varied and rich neo-soul record, mwithnsome great influences coming in from west coast hip-hop. It seems like it will only be a matter of time before we see .Paak being associated with Frank Ocean and the like, as well as doing hooks on many more major hip-hop albums coming out of the west coast.

4.0 excellent | Jared Floryan | January 25th 16 | Native to Oxnard, California, Anderson .Paak's 2016 full-length album has a noticeably laidback feel to it. Clocking in at an hour long, Malibu is effective in balancing the hip hop, soul, and R&B influences that usually float in and out of the record, and Anderson's singing also helps in this regard. Though he doesn't quite strike me as a convincing storyteller yet nor is the album consistently powerful, there still is a lot to like about the young man's efforts here. He boasts serious potential and could release a true winner of an offering eventually once Anderson learns to lay off a little bit of the fat (*cough* "Silicon Valley" *cough*).

3.5 great | Haygoody | January 24th 16 | Paak emerges here as a clean-cut starry-eyed R&B prodigy. Although the laid back tone of many of the tracks tends to undermine a couple, Paak's crisp production and soothing voice work very well together. Also Rapsody's feature is fantastic on the song Without You.
