311s Evolver brings more diverse styles for its hardcore fans, and delivers a radio friendly alternative sound. The album title is truly representing where the boys from Nebraska are at this time of their careers
Creatures- Great opening to an album, brings that signature hardcore 311 sound, nice, aggresive and upbeat and heavy metal like guitar from Mit.
5/5
Reconsider Everything- If I had to choose one song that represented the album, it would be this song, good guitar effects from both Nick and Tim. Heavy chorus and chilled out lyrics.
4.5/5
Crack the Code- One of my favorites, great beat but forgettable guitar and instrumental. The vocals really carry this song though. SA and Nick trading poetic verses as always, complete with a sweet catchy SA prechorus.
4.5/5
Same Mistake Twice- This song gets a ton of negative feedback, because of the similarity it has with the song “Flowing”. The instrumentals of these two songs are basically the same thing. But, looking past that, this song has great hard rock and punk feel and solid lyrics.
3.5/5
Beyond the Gray Sky- Wow. Sometimes 311 pulls out an epic sounding ballad, and this one delivers time and time again sweetly. Quiet and slow verses and great singing by Nick and Sa, into an extremely powerful, moving chorus completed by a beautiful guitar solo.
6/5
Seems Uncertain- This song is very strange, and has that “Transistor” weird vibe from it. It sounds great, but being mostly a Nick only song the vocals can sometimes drag on. It still has that slow rainy day relaxed feel though.
3/5
Still Dreaming- Probably the most forgettable song on the album, not because it’s bad, just because it’s well, forgettable. SA does his part in partially saving the song, giving his upbeat verses.
3/5
Give Me a Call- One of the more pop like songs done by 311, and it holds up. Chad Sexton keeps it going on the drums, and SA and Nick do a decent job with a catchy chorus.
3.5/5
Don’t Dwell- This song is very close to being perfect. Extremely good bass filler from P Nut, accompanied by flowing harmonies by Nick and Sa. Funky, but a little too short for me.
4.5/5
Other Side of Things- Awesome classic 311 song that should get more recognition. Definitely has that Grassroots feel with SA singing most of it and Nick adding in a decent rap (only “rap” track on the album)
5/5
Sometimes Jacks Rule The Realm- Most people will have mixed feelings about this song, it opens with an acoustic, slow and soft moving Nick singing, and then picks up into a nice ballad feel with sweeping guitars. I feel like it tries to be as epic as “Beyond the Gray Sky” but drags on without much power, although Nick does a good job showing off his voice.
