What is there to say about Wolves in the Throne Room's second album, except that it's the most elegant black metal release since Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse? Each song achieves an atmosphere that is nothing short of perfect and an improvement in almost every way on the band's debut. Furious black metal sections give way to calmly dense post-metal sections with gorgeous female vocals, never once sacrificing beauty or emotion. With fantastic production, Two Hunters represents a very natural step forward for the best American band currently making black metal.

Well, it's certainly easy to see how this album could have been great. That, at least, is something I'm happy to compliment them on. And yet, Two Hunters is held back on several back points. First, some of the playing here is really sloppy (the guitar at slower tempos and the drums at higher ones, in particular), and in this context that's a real problem. Second, the production during the heavier sections is really, really bad, with the snare (which sounds awful) dominating everything else in the mix. Third, the band seem insistent on abusing their ideas. This album would have been improved immeasurably if they'd come up with some more material, but instead they choose to make one idea last as long as humanly possible before moving on to the next. I can't imagine how boring some of this is to play. Props to WITTR for coming up with a sound and a concept that will serve them well, but the execution here leaves a lot to be desired.

Weirdly enough, the weakest parts here feel like they are the straight up bm bits. This might however just be out of contrast with the sheer beauty of the rest. This album is a master class at intros, atmosphere buildups, clair obscur play with the clean and hard sections, and building up calmly to abrupt and satisfying harsh explosions. Perhaps the least engaging bit was the midtrack of 2, but on the whole this is truly stunning. 4.2

Oozing with atmosphere this reminds me almost of a Burzum style band, which used Black Metal not at all to prove proficiency, but just thrives off armosphere and emotion. Second track is my favourite, and only thing I have to complain about is I found the interlude of the third track a little long.

Cascadian black metal embodied or; one of the most natural-sounding record of the black metal spectrum. The most impressive feature here is the production; even though all three musicians display a devilish use of their instruments, it's never at the expense of the atmosphere. It's as if the ambient moments are too beautiful compared to the ugliness of the tremolo parts. The overall soundscape oscillates between parts so violent they feel destructive, and others so pure they should become the symbol of birth. This duality represents the band's philosophy: to start a whole new world, you first need to destroy the one already in place. Deeply rooted in its home region, the band unleashes a wild and primal brand of atmoblack to create a mystic space that HHH still tries to replicate. Maybe transcendental black metal isn't what we thought it was.

Everything I can say about "Diadem" is just as applicable here. What makes this slightly different (perhaps even *slightly* better) is that it is more concise, and while it does manage to wander off in its own otherworldly sea, it wastes absolutely no time in getting there. Why hold back on the monolithic adventure that awaits?

I have mixed feelings on this black metal record; on the whole, it lacks the atmosphere to justify the length of its songs, but there are moments of brilliance: the guitar slide and scream on the final track (which is also the best one on the album), the epic intro track, and some great riffing on "Behold the Vastness and Sorrow." It isn't a particularly original effort, though, and the female vocals feel contrived. Nonetheless, the good outweighs the bad, and fans of the genre should enjoy.

In terms of USBM, no band other than Weakling and Agalloch at their blackest have had as much of an impact on the scene as Wolves In The Throne Room did and still do. Two Hunters is the second in a trilogy of excellent USBM that keeps the Cascadian sound at its roots: windy tremolo riffs, ghostly and emotional vocals, drumming that juxtaposes plodding rhythms with mid-paced blast beats while remaining impassioned, and a woodsy, naturistic aesthetic and theme. Occasionally, clean vocals will shine through as scant moments of clarity in a largely dense fog of black metal before being consumed by the hypnotic ether once again. Just in this record alone, you can hear the style, the mindset, the ethos; influencers of plenty of bands playing music in the scene today. While it is the weakest out of the first three records in the opinion of yours truly, it's still a needed listen for any fan of USBM, as are the other two, needless to say.

The acme of Cascadian Black Metal. Natural beauty is channeled here in a way you'd never think possible in the hands of an extreme metal band. But to call this supremely calming and ambient record "extreme" seems a little misguided. You can get lost in the lush sonic expanse if you're not careful -- and once lost, you may not wish to find your way back again. This is living, breathing music. A wonderful re-contextualizing of Norwegian BM tropes. The macabre becomes the triumphant. The bleak becomes... well, bleak - but tempered by awe in the face of nature. This is the best kind of cultural appropriation and there needn't be any controversy.

Simply a boring album with repetitive, drawn-out riffs (think doom metal), and one not
executed very well at all. If these guys weren't American, I doubt you would have ever heard
of them. Cliched lyrics song titles and lyrics don't help either. On the positive side, the
last song has some truly inspired parts, which saves the album from an even worse rating.
And what the fuck is up with people comparing them to Emperor? They are far, far away from
them--musically, talent-wise, and in terms of writing memorable and heavy riffs.

Didn't think this was that great at first but then again I was just starting to get into Cascadian Black Metal and did not really understand it fully yet. This is WITTR's best album to me, extremely atmospheric with a natural production that stays with you after repeated listens. The album is strong from start to finish throughout its 4 songs but the higlight is undoubtly the last song, an epic that will stand the test of time as one of the best atmospheric black metal songs ever.

This album combines a genre I was unfamiliar with at the time(black metal), with a genre that I absolutely love (post-rock). It takes the harsh vocals and rapid-fire drumming of black metal and places them inbetween crescendos, ambient passages and climaxes. The atmosphere is dark and pessimistic, but there is a feeling of hope buried within every song, whether it is the guitar riff halfway through "Behold the Vastness of Sorrow" or the soft female vocals in the last two tracks. Two Hunters is a fantastic black metal album and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a taste of the genre.
