Unique stuff, dark death metal with scifi and occult themes, atmospheric keyboards and thrash traits? Check. One of the most refreshing listens in a long time.

Basically a Morbid Angel and Emperor crossover. Imagine the technical, but groovy Death Metal of early Morbid Angel combined with a Sci-Fi theme and Emperor?s keyboards. That is what this is. Now unfortunately, the keyboards in the DM are a bit of an issue to me, and peoduction is muddy. If those weren?t present this would be a bona-fide Death Metal classic for me.

Nocturnus is one of the most innovative bands in the history of Death Metal. The inclusion of keyboards and atmospheric effects began with "The Key", influencing numerous bands that appear until this day. The album is complete and has all the necessary pecularities of the genre. The design of the cover of the disc is really sensational and was what attracted me most to listen to the band. The sonority and the production may bother in some moments, but listening to it for a few weeks will result in an even more positive rating.

Death-thrash with keyboards? It actually works, and works well. Structurally, The Key is a straightforward assault in the vein of Sadus or Dark Angel, but the neoclassical fills and keyboard overlays give this album an incredible atmosphere and tone that really gives it the feel of an album from the future. I'd say the thing that holds this album back is the over-reliance on guitar wankery and a few of the tracks being shows of technicality rather than being true songs. All the same, I love this album.

A very technical, light speed, spacey tech death album. The only bad thing I have to say about The Key is that the production isn't very good.
