I don't know what specifically (besides some obvious layering) they do to make Vortex's clean vocals sound the way they do, but I don't like the result. They feel too clean, too polished to be truly "human". Or at least, too perfect to sound pleasing in a metal context. The rest of the music is fine, but the album just feels like the Vortex Show, with his vocals being an obvious focus due to their weird perfect sound. The combination of their being a distraction with the sort-of genericness (if that's even correct?) of the rest of the music robs it, initially, of much enjoyability. It all just feels too sterile.

A very solid and enjoyable album...rPersonally I enjoyed more the tracks with less grunt vocals... rI wish they keep moving in that direction..

Borknagar have pretty much perfected their progressive black metal sound while they slowly move closer to the prog side of the house. I really like all the vocalists they have on this release.

Fantastic, multi-layered black metal record. There's nothing done here that hasn't exactly been done before, the production could be much more interesting, and the songs certainly take their time. But it's a great album with a surprising amount of harmony, vocal skill, and technical dexterity.

Winter Thrice feels like it's trying to replicate the effects of being in a blizzard; stylistically all over the place, particularly chilling in a swarming way, and discontent to stick with one particular tug of the wind for too long. There's a lot to take in, and the album remains enjoyable, it's just that it may be too overzealous for its own good.

Moreso than the synthetic overproduction and somewhat aimless songwriting, what bothers me about this album, and others like it, is the lack of balance. Everything-- and I mean everything-- is multi-tracked within an inch of its life with would-be-epic intentions, and as such the whole record is overzealous and one-note. It all runs together. Restraint and indulgence must play equal parts, and Borknagar, on this album, rely entirely on the latter.
