disregarding that the game received critical acclaim i feel like the soundtrack can stand up on its own, diverse musical styles and rall very effective at producing tears

Amazing soundtrack to accompany an amazing game. Perfectly captures the sound of older chiptunes found in RPGs and even mixes some modern sounds into the mix here and there. A good amount of variety here, and it's all the more impressive that it was just one guy that made all the music.

Video game music... An odd genre that contains some of the catchiest and most detailed music ever penned, and yet is almost never talked about in larger conversations about music as an artform, and as a whole. For any skeptics, I can assure you that Toby Fox's "Undertale" OST transcends that of just "music for a video game," and indeed has some of the most profoundly expert executions of characterization, instrumentation, use of leitmotif, and melody writing you can find in an original soundtrack of any kind. That is to say that the experience is still greatly enhanced by playing the game and being familiar with its characters, as well as the context of each track, but this is one of few soundtracks I find myself listening to on its own for the genuine experience.

Regardless of what you think of the game or its fanbase, you have to admit that Toby Fox made one kickass soundtrack to it all. Rarely do you find an album two hours plus that has only maybe ten or so minutes of filler, but that's exactly what the UNDERTALE Soundtrack provides. It's interesting how a decidedly minimal style such as bit music can sound so full and encompassing, but tracks like "Megalovania", "Your Best Nightmare", and "Waterfall" prove it can be done (with slight help from physical instruments). There's a treasure trove of memorable melodies to be found here as well, and the amount of tones and moods the album touches on is wide and impressive. It's quite the immersive experience, and as such is an adventure in itself just to listen to it. There's no secret as to why it's definitely made its mark as one of the best video game soundtracks in recent memory. So, with all of that said: IM SORRY THUNDERSNAIL

Toby Fox's Undertale Soundtrack contains a lot of ideas; mere motifs that are just begging for attention. Each track is a melody, and not much more. Many of these ditties, as short as 6 seconds, can be pleasant to listen to but really don't hold much substance - especially when you hear the same bastardized melody in different pitches and with varying amounts of reverb. A lot of the sounds present here also just sound sort of cheap, and lack any sense of nuance. This is Fisher Price: My First Album.
