"but it just feels so empty" - http://live.drjays.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/large_lebron-james.jpg The list of bands I have heard that truly evoke the spirit of Lovecraftian horrors is but of a precious few, but I believe I've found my newest entry. Simply put, other bands simply wrote about these terrifying mystic creatures, while these compositions seem to be written by terrifying mystic creatures. The production is thick and dirty, and the guitars and drums seem to swirl around in the muck with a strikingly perfect balance of angular dissonance and technical proficiency. The vocals are unholy and low, sometimes sounding froggish and very reminiscent of Antii Boman. As far as songwriting goes, a downright nefarious mix of unrelenting technical death metal, smothering doom metal, and eerily dark ambience makes the album sound very fresh and while it can be stylistically compared to albums by Profound Lore labelmates Portal, it's definitely its own, more accessible beast. In a nutshell, Le Dernier Crepuscle is an enthralling and immensely satisfying foray into the otherworldly and unspeakable. And, for what it's worth, it has taken an early lead as my MAOTY as a result.

Every time I listen to this album I feel like I need to take a shower as if I just emerged from a swamp of pure filth and all things horrible. Le Dernier Crepuscule is pure Death Metal with a tablespoon of doom and a dash of technicality. The entire album is good but doesn't really radiate anywhere around that. Solid low-tuned guitar rhythms that constantly wear the listener down into a pit of despair with a bass that seems to run the show at times, fresh for the genre. At 52 minutes long the album feels much more than that as the tracks blend together beneath the filthy dread while the vocalist and drums really don't ever stand out. Also, is this vocalist part insect or something. Highlights are Voidspawn and Scriptures from the Typhlodians. Props also go to the end of Into the Vaults of Ingurguitating Obscurity; whatever is going on there sends chills up my spine every-time, sickening. Solid death metal but the themed-lyrics and bass are not enough to make this album a great one.

Chthe'ilist have succeeded where many others have failed. They have successfully harnessed the eldritch forces that empowered Demilich to make this absolute monster of an album.

2016's Artificial Brain. Absolutely essential metal. Dances on the border of old and new with elegance rarely seen in death metal. Not as cohesive as I would like, but without a doubt worth your time.

Worshipping the altars of Demilich and Timeghoul, Phil Tougas et al. pay undeniable tribute to their forefathers, but withouth being bereft of originality. Driven by crazy good riffs, monstrous yet varied vocals, subtle keys and insane leads, this LP proves Chthe'ilist as one of the best upcoming acts in the current death metal scene.
