This album deserves a solid 4/5. 311 is an old favorite of mine and this is my favorite album from their catalog. 311 is very creative and their style is refreshing because it is much different than what you typically expect on the radio. Although 311 is a mainstream rock band, they have a very significant sound that no other band can be compared with. Tracks on this album which prove very entertaining are "Down," "Purpose," and "Don't Stay Home." The seemingly metal and rap combination for most tracks is cohesive and works well with the most of the album. I recommend it as an introduction to 311 as well as a must if you enjoy mainstream rock.

Production value is DEF better from their prior two albums. Even got a few singles worth spinning again. I'm convinced this is aesthetically their first album w/ a higher budget, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

How funny is it that one year after their creative and ahead of its time album Grassroots, 311 releases the Blue Album, which is also ahead of its time. However, this album is ahead of its time in that it predicts all the horrible and cringe-worthy tropes of late 90's rock. This project has a lot of raw and unfocused energy and just seems like an angrier, less memorable version of Grassroots. It's insane how "Down" is the song that 311 is known for (besides "Amber"), and it's not terrible but has certainly not aged well. The Blue Album is Grassroots for fans of shitty nu-metal, although I'd certainly listen to this over Uplifter or Voyager.

311 were highly relevant at the time of their self-titled album's launch, and this wasn't too challenging to see why. The fusion of punk, hip hop, and reggae would've been a slight disaster if these Nebraskans weren't so natural with the musical direction they had in mind. Looking at this release as a whole, a lot of the tracks are solid from top to bottom and the musicianship makes up for a giant lack of originality with the bandmates' frenzied spirits and amazing composition.

Awkward rapping and soft-ass reggae parts like you might expect from Nebraska natives and a bit questionable lyrically, but similarly lovable in a 'but they're so well-meaning' sort of way. Not to mention, they're about infinitely more natural, well-versed, well-rounded, and fun to listen to than most of their rap-rock peers.

Love the energy, attitude, and creativity on this album. It is great combination of alternative rock, hip hop, metal, and reggae.

This is in fact my very first 311 album listened to. And as much as I think that this album is highly underrated, I'm not going to preach about it, in fear of sounding like some kind of fanboy.
If you want to try to get into 311, this album is the place to look. With its raw sound, its energy will keep you listening time after time. Its a damn shame 311 can't make another album as kickas* as this one.
