A nice collection of odds and ends that didn't make it onto his previous albums for whatever
reason. Not a huge fan of Ninet's vocals on Don't Hate Me as they seem really out of place
(feel like they could've picked a better Porcupine Tree song) but the others are great,
especially Book Of Regrets and Vermillioncore.

This thing just jumps all over the place. At times it is Prog-Rock, then some kind of overproduced Garage Rock, then Indie Rock, then Pop-Rock, and then back to Prog-Rock. Not to mention, those interludes that sound as if they were supposed to be in a Symphonic Metal opera. Plus, Wilson's vocals just do nothing for me. But it does have its moments. Some instrumentation is pretty solid. Some lyrics are alright. But for the most part, it is quite a bore.

Considering how the majority of these tracks are leftovers from the HCE and Raven sessions, this
mini-album flows incredibly well. Though "Year of the Plague" and "Sunday Rain Sets In" act as
merely interludes, the rest of the release is fantastic. "Vermillioncore" is perhaps some of the
best Metal Steven has ever written, and the new recording of "Don't Hate Me" is superb. A definite
recommendation, especially if you're a big fan of Hand Cannot Erase (as I am). This might have
been a 4.5, if only it was a bit longer. It might have been a good idea to include that new
recording of Lazarus on this, but oh well.

This small collection of songs creates an indipendent and satisfying entity that shows Steven Wilson's ability to write moody songs (like the Postcard-y Happiness III, the mellow Year of Plague and the noir Sunday Rain Sets In) but also more agressive tunes, like the magnum opus My Book of Regrets, that finds SW rearranging some of his ideas into something new and beautiful. Vermillioncore is a jazzy intrumental with psychedelic influences and is bound to make the listener move his body in the rhythm. The EP closes with a new version of Don't Hate Me, where SW sings a duet with Ninet Tayeb, who we first listened on Hand.Cannot.Erase. This addition to Steven Wilson's catalogue is certainly a worthy one and works perfectly as a small treat to make the waiting for his next offering a little more bearable.
