Riffy black metal from the frontman of Immortal. It's nothing extraordinary, but it's definitely a solid and consistent album.

When it comes to metal of the black inclination, the breadth and barbarism of Abbath's scare+despair components just about match that of the silly album cover -- instead of a full-on commitment to swallowing worlds and coercing into abysses, they transmit something a bit more in the way of traditionalist heavy-n-gallopin' thrashy riffage; their sturdy trounce rather stock but proficient and consistent enough to remain engaging and warrant some war-troll kitsch. Particularly adept at crescendo-breaking belches and well-timed synth-horns.

Abbath's solo outing is clearly a product of our time; a time where nostalgia is sweeping over the masses. The thrash/black metal combo sounds fresh here because it goes back to black metal's roots, which were in thrash metal. As a result, the album is one of the more fun black metal albums in recent memory, yet it's also one of the least interesting and, ultimately, forgettable. Great background music, but when you sit down and focus on the music, it doesn't quite hold up.

By the numbers old-school black metal. Pleasant enough, but rarely memorable or emotionally
gripping, and it doesn't bring anything particularly impressive or artistically interesting to the
table.
I would watch it live, though, if I had the chance. Current live drummer Gabe Seeber is quite
impressive.

Abbath by nature is a clear throwback Black Metal album with a conservative approach but ironically in this era of metal it provides a full-circle sort of freshness. Abbath's approach may be somewhat straightforward but when it ain't broke, don'f fix it. And honestly, there are many great subtleties to this record and the production perfectly captures the blend of Black Metal ride-beating, Pantera-esque rhythm riffs and Abbath's unique vocals; damn dude buy a humidifier or something. Despite just about everyone calling it done-before and safe the album is one that provides repeated playbacks that are always worthy of the 40 minute runtime. Bonus points for the varied approaches in the best tracks. Fenrir Hunts is staggeringly quick with a relentless assault from the entire group. Ashes of the Damned is a bit more grandiose with some epic one-off horns, tasteful touch that was beyond unexpected. To War by all accounts is the best possible way to start the album with a groovy rhythm eventually diving into the machine gun black metal snare beatdown. The old guys seem to be ruling metal lately, add Abbath's name to that list.
