This is a MUST HAVE album. Ben Harper has an amazing voice; he has evolved immeasurably since "Welcome to the Cruel World"(a brilliant album, as well). The idea of this album - a singer and his band holed up in a little studio after a tour with limited time - is daring to say the least. They pull it off so well, though. You are hooked from the beginning of "Don't let them take the fight out of you." The second track, "In The Color" is tremendous. It has an infectious rhythym. In listing 'other notable songs' I would have to include each and evry track. There is so much and such a range of emotion captured on this album - it is one of the most well-rounded albums you will ever encounter.
Also, the Innocent Criminals are so much more than a 'backing band.' Each of them shines in their own right throughout the album. Harper was certainly right in featuring them on the cover and in the CD booklet. This is a very cohesive bond between frontman and band. Again, this album should be in everyone's collection. In this collection of songs, I heard a little of many of my favorite artists - Van Morrison, Cat Stevens, Ray Charles - even Neil Young (Lonesome Train). You have to own this album!!
