What some may call a return to form for Baroness is the first form I've heard them in, as this is the first of their color-coded albums I've listened to. As such, I know not if this is truly a return to form, but after listening, I can say that I definitely understand the hype for this band and why people like them. It's a mixture of psychedelic, stoner, and progressive rock that contains lovely dueling guitars, fun drumming, charismatic vocals, great underlying bass, and just the right amount of fuzz. The pop sensibilities are aplenty here as well, with three of the best songs in "Shock Me", "Chlorine And Wine", and "If I Had To Wake Up (Would You Stop The Rain?)" all containing very catchy choruses and uplifting passages within them. The record just feels triumphant, and with the band surviving an accident that almost killed them, it is kind of heartwarming that it's this good and this full of good vibes.

The production and instrument playing are top notch and help create really catchy riffs and moments.. The singing on the other hand is insanely poppy and too clean for my tastes. Second half is way better than the first with songs like Chlorine & Wine and If I Have To Wake Up but everything else really blends in for me. The best kind of brick wall compression mixing but the singer has almost no dynamic range so these epic anthemic songs of survival just don't do much for me by the end.

Production suckz as always, most of their songs are awesome, some others are subpar rstoner. Nonetheless, I think it's their best of the 2010s, mainly because they managed to keep it quite concise this time.

Don't get me wrong there are some excellent songs buried in here ('Chlorine and Wine' is one of the best things that I have heard from the band) but the production is atrocious and buries the music in distortion. While the calmer sections are ok the heavier moments crackle with what can only be described as white noise making the album a chore to listen to. I am not an audiophile but for a band like Baroness who's music thrives on dynamics the choice of production proves to be fatal and destroys my personal enjoyment of the album. The 2.5 is carried purely by the songwriting and is the only aspect of the album that saves it from a much lower score.

One of the best metal releases of 2015. Baroness returned stronger after the accident and released perhaps their best album. Excellent record. My favorites are "Morningstar", "Shock me", the catchy "Try to Disappear", "Kerosene" (Mastodon's influence is very clear) and the epic "Chlorine & Wine"...
