Arca has been on the scene for a couple of years now, but this is his first true full realization of his sound. Everything on this LP is equal parts expansive, subdued, loud, experimental, and interesting. He combines IDM with industrial techno and glitch, and as a result it has a wonderfully layered and full feeling to it, but also a flexible one as well. The use of stop-time on several of these tracks is sleek, and in general there's a lot of dynamics to the music. The album flows very well, giving adequate breathing room when needed, but pouring on the progressively loud and explosive electronics after the downtime. There is nary a bad track to be found throughout the hour long runtime, and though it may seem daunting to get through, it is actually surprisingly smooth and seamless. You never feel like it's been an hour, essentially. In short, Arca creates one of the best electronic releases of the year, one that is as gratifying on a first listen as it is rewarding on several more.

Everywhere you look, there exist people who are just not right in the head. Whether these denizens are bashing their craniums against the wall silly or spouting nonsensical crap like how babies would be the most intelligent creatures if they possessed the ability to talk, the actions that the crazies commit range from amusing to plain ridiculous. If we as the mentally stable folk delve too far into madness like them, we might become hideous mutations considered both rare and commonplace. This is my interpretation of Alejandro Ghersi's (aka Arca) 2015 studio album, entitled Mutant. Lasting for an hour and 2 minutes, the record is an undeniably interesting release with a lot going on during its duration. Although it's a tad directionless from a composition perspective and contains a few throwaway songs, this album is still very commendable for what Arca was trying to do here. I feel that Mutant will reveal itself more to the listeners if they took the time to give it additional spins. I must say that sooner or later, the LP's contents will all come together.

A solid, if occasionally homogenous album from an exciting producer with one of the most unique sounds in modern electronic music. Songs like Enveloped find Arca at his best - dismantling the skeletons of modern hip-hop and electronic beat structures to create a wobbling, disconcerting, and, most of all, beautiful piece of art.

Despite its scattered nature, Mutant manages to fuse beauty and chaos in a cohesive manner. Synthetic worlds swallow what remains of organic instruments through its giant filters - that mandolin sound gaddaym. It's a journey, tracks smoothly transitioning into each other while still starkly moving from the previously created template. It does repeat some fragments from time to time, but, if anything, it adds some cohesion to the whole package.
