The songs on here go for a certain, heartwarming sound, but fall flat on their faces by lacking any kind of interesting dynamics, something their previous rhythm section helped them avoid for all of their records up until now. The drumming on this record is bland as shit, and for most of the time these songs are just meandering about, sometimes showing off tiny glimpses of Russell's capabilities on the axe, only to return to their usual blandness afterwards. It may not be as moronically bad and unlistenable as Cudis SB2H, but it comes close in how lifeless almost everything sounds and feels all of the time.

I like these guys quite a bit, and I like they're trying some different stuff with their sound and all that, but the album's still got some of the weakest stuff I've heard from the Bloc yet. Still decent for the most part, but I'm probably gonna be coming back to this album the least out of their catalog, and that ain't cool. Bump

Bloc Party loses two of its core members resulting in an album that is devoid of the energy or qualities found on the band's previous releases. Hymns is a much more subdued and slowed down album. Not terrible, just a bit disappointing. Bump

Basically a Kele solo album, which is good and bad. Most tracks sound like a sister album to Trick with
Kele's trademark falsetto & atmospheric synths. I'm struggling to find any guitar here at all, while
drumming is very bland. Seems like the rest of the band have jumped ship. Oddly, the best moments
are when things are slowed right down: Only He Can Heel Me / Into the Earth / Exes / Virtue. Overall, a
fresh start for Bloc Party that would come across that little bit more impressive if Trick never
happened.
